Notes
The two Robert Rice/Royce/Roice men in New England (one in Boston, and
the other appearing later in CT) were not the same person. Our Robert
Royce of New London is not the same Robert Rice who was a Freeman in
Massachusets in 1634 and was one of those men disarmed in the Boston
1637 for adherence to the opinions of the Party of Wheelright and
Hutchinson. Our Robert Royce was found in Straftford, west of New
Haven, before 1650, and he was there in 1656.
In 1657, he came to New London. While there, he was Constable in
1660; Townsmen in 1663, 1667 and 1668; and in 1667, he was appointed
to keep an ordinary. Also in 1667, he was freed from military
training, probably due to his age.
Robert Royce was a resident of Wallingford, CT, at the time of his
death. He had five children. In his will, Robert left a small
gratuity to each of the churches in New London, Norwich, and
Wallingford, CT.
World Family Tree, Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree 3162 states that Robert Royce
died in 1676 in New London, CT.
Children of Robert Royce and Mary Sims are:
171i. Sarah Royce, born Abt 1634 in Epswick, England or Martock, Somerset, England; died 01 May 1711 in Norwich, New London Co., CT; married John Calkins 1658 in New London, New London Co., CT. ii. Jonathan Royce, born 1636 in New London, New London Co., CT; died 1689 in prob. Norwich, CT; married (1) Mary Spinning Nov 1656 in New Haven, New Haven Co., CT; married (2) Deborah Calkins 04 Jun 1660.
This name is identical with Rice. The Robert Royce of New London, is presumed to be the Robert Rice,
who was entered freeman in Mass. 1634, and one of these disarmed in Boston, 1637, for adherence to the opinions and party of Wheelright and Hutchinson.
When he left Boston is not known; but he is found at Stratford, west of New Canin, before 1650, and was there in 1656. In 1657 he came to New London, and dthe town granted him the original Post lot, on Post Hill. He was by trade a shoemaker, and was constable in 1660, of of the townsman in 1663, in 1667 appointed to keep an ordinary and the same year "freed from training", probably on account of age. He was again townsman in 1668.
Three children of Robert and Elizabeth Rice are recorded in Boston; Joshua born 1637; Nathaniel 1639, and a daughter that dies in infancy. Of Joshua, nothing further is known. At New London, we find momentoos of five sons and three daughters, Jonathan was probably the oldest son; he married in June 1660, Deborah, daughter of Hugh Caulkins, and he removed to Norwich, of which town he was one of its first proprietors.
Nehemiah may be ranked, by supposition, as the second son; he married Nov 20, 1660,Hannah, daughter of James Morgan. In 1663 Robert Royce petitioned the town for a grant of land to settle his two sons, Samuel and Nathaniel. This was granted; there father gave them also his mountain farm, "bought of Weaver Smith and lying west of Henifer Brook; by the mountain. The name of Royce's Mountain was long retained in that locality. The Royce Mountain farm was purchased by John and Wait Winthrop, in 1691 - the present Miller farm is a part of it.
Samuel Royce married Jan 9, 1666-1667, Hannah, daughter of Josiah Churchwood, of Wethersfield.
Isaac Royce was married to Elizabeth, oldest daughter of Samuel Lothrop and John Lothrop was married to Ruth, daughter of Robert Royce, Dec 15, 1669.
This double-marriage was performed by Daniel Wetherell, commissioner and probably in the court-room, as it was recorded among the other proceedings of the court. Marriages were sometimes conducted in that manner; the couple entering the room with their friends, and arranging themselves in front of the bench.
Nehemiah, Samuel, Nathaniel and Isaac Royce, all removed their families to Wallingford, a township that had been recently set off from New Canin and previously called New Canin village. The marriage and children of Nathaniel Royce are not registered in New London. At a late period of his life, he married the relict of Sargent Peter Farnham of Killingworth, and was living at Wallingford in 1712.
Some of the Royce family was left at New London, after the death of Robert, but his aged widow, who in 1688, was still an occupant of the Post Hill homestead, whish was subsequently sold to John Prentis.
The remains of the Royce land was purchased by Rev. Gudron Saltonstall, and has of late been known as the Mumfoed lot. I lies west of the old burial ground and was the original house lot of Rev. Richard Blinman
