He married Jane Caldwell September 14, 1815 in Wheatfield twnshp Indiana Co, Pa., daughter of Joesph Caldwell and Sarah. She was born May 18, 1791, and died 1845 in Moundsville, W Va..

Notes for William Gore Elder:
William Gore Elder was named for his uncle, Dr. Wm. Gore Elder. William married Jane Caldwell on 14 Sept. 1815. He left home and settled in West Virginia eventually. He died 20 Nov. 1874 at or near Moundsville, West Virginia. He was born August 23, 1794 in Wheatfield township of Indiana Co., Pennsylvania (at that time, and until 1803, when Indiana Co. was formed, Wheatfield twsp. was a part of Westmoreland Co., Pa.) in a log cabin farm home located about three miles directly east of Armagh, Pa. situated on what was then the old Northern Pennsylvania Turnpike and which is now the Willian Penn Highway.
It is recalled by his nephew, James Newton Elder, of Indiana, Pa., that William Gore Elder was reported to have had only six weeks of schooling but was considered quite bright by the family...he was especially quick in mathematics, a large man, of fine physique, and a great reader. He was a professor and authority of mathematics. William Elder made several visits back to the Indiana Co. homestead.
Wm. Gore Elder was trained in farming, and taught the blacksmith trade by his father but was not primarily interested in either pursuit although he engaged in them on occasion and used them as stepping stones to other occupations. In later life he was chiefly, recalled as an auctioneer, and apparently he dealt some in the buying and selling of land.
One thing is certain, he did not live at any one definite place very long because it is known that he lived part of his life and was located at times in Moundsville and Sistersville W.V. (then Virginia), on occasion in Indiana Co. PA., and Richland twp of Greene Co., PA., because that county`s records show that he and his wife bought several pieces of property in that section in 1827. Also he secured a landwarrant for three acres in that county, 8 March 1828, from the government. Since Richland township is just across the state line in PA. from West Virginia, and it is the place where John, the Second, was settled for quite some time, presumably either one or the other brother brought the other brother to the vicinity. Although he spent some of the last part of his life at the farm home of his brother, Samuel, in Wheatfield twsp of Indiana Co., it is reported that he died in Moundsville, W. Va. The date of his death is recorded in family records as November 20, 1874, when he was 80 years old.
He had three sons: William, John and Samuel. Of these William and Samuel were trained as blacksmiths (John, the First, taught this trade to all his sons and William presumably trained his sons in this too.) and it is believed that they settled at Moundsville, W. Va., or near there, and died there.

Notes for Jane Caldwell:
William G Elder was married Sept. 14, 1815 to Jane Caldwell, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Caldwell, farmers who lived in or near Wheatfield twsp of Indiana Co., Pa. d. Jun 1849 at 57 years of age First Street Church Moundsville consort of William Elder

She was born December 23, 1815 in east of Wheatfield twnshp Indiana Co, PA., and died February 28, 1903 in * Seward, Westmoreland Co., PA.

Notes for Samuel Elder:
Samuel Elder was born on the farm now occupied by John Schrock, East Wheatfield Twp. in 1798, and was a son of John and Agnes Elder nee McManimy, natives of Ireland, and Episcopalians. The former came with two brothers to America in 1791. Samuel located in Westmoreland; William in Somerset, and John in Huntingdon Co.
Samuel, second son of John Elder, the First, bought a farm about one mile East of the place where the original Elder home was located. His farm was warranted to John Bolar (the name was originallly spelled Bowler) in 1797 and the patent on it was issued to Daniel and Susannah Reynolds in 1825, shortly after which Samuel acquired it. A large frame house stood on the property until it burned down shortly before 1900. Also on the property was a blacksmith shop. The house was sufficiently commodious that it served as a combination tavern and a traveller`s overnight stop. For a time, liquor was sold at the house until Samuel`s second wife persuaded him to stop because it attracted to the house the objectionable men who worked the iron furnaces nearby.
When he made his will, 1 June 1880, (filed 29 Nov. 1889, Indiana Will #4785, Book 6, Page 405) he required his two living sons: William Peeler Elder and James Newton Elder, to provide for his wife for the remainder of her life, and bequeathed to them his farm in East Wheatfield consisting of 150 acres, a city lot in Indiana, Pa.; some city lots in New Florence, Westmoreland Co., Pa. and some mountain lands located in Cambria and Indiana Co.; $100 to his daughter Eliza Driscoll; $100 to his grandaon, William Lininger, son of his deceased daughter, Nancy; $100 to his daughter, Margaret, wife of Lewis Tinkccom; $200 to his daughter, Mary Ann, wife of Maize Morrison, lately dead; $1000 to his daughter, Jennie; to his son James Newton, the additional sum of $150 per year from the date of the will to the date of his death providing that James Newton remained on the farm, and the residue was to be divided among the two sons and the daughter, Jennie.
Samuel died 25 Nov 1889, aged 91, and is buried in the (Armagh) Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He was a deacon of that church for many years. He was twice married. His first wife was Margaret Mellon whose home was near Ligonier in Westmoreland Co. and who is of same family as prominent Pittsburghers by same name. She was born in 1797 and died 2 Oct. 1848 according to her headstone in the Armagh Cemetery. He was a deacon in the Armaugh Presbyterian church for many years. After his first wife`s death, Samuel Elder married Margaret Peelor, whose home was near Indiana, Pa.
