James Houchin did not talk much about his family and nothing was known about his Houchin siblings or the extended Houchin clan until internet research was carried out in 2006. The final confirmation came by matching a picture of grandpa David Houchin with ones that his son Arthur Preston Houchin's family had.
James did not grow up with his natural father, David Houchin. When he was five, his mother Nancy Acker married Sherman Reed. Nancy and Sherman had a son, Glen, and a daughter, Mabel, who are both mentioned in James' obituary. They lived in Nebraska until James grew up and married Nona Fales. The Shermans moved to Clark county east of Watertown, South Dakota sometime after the 1910 census and prior to the WWI Draft Registration in Sept. of 1918. While on a trip to Montana with his horse trailer, around the year 1916, his wife Nona died and James buried her there. Much later James returned to visit the grave with his daughter Eunice and grandson Harold Moser. The grave was unmarked, but James erected a little wooden cross while he was there. Harold said that his mother told him that she and Alvin were cared for by James' mother after their mother died.
It is said that India was a "mail order bride". They married in Sandyville, IA, and returned to South Dakota for several years, until relocating to near Mora, MN, north of the Twin Cities, where they lived until moving down to southern Minnesota. India and most of the family settled in the Albert Lea vicinity while James resided for several years in Lancaster, Wisconsin.
Grandson Harold Moser said that he and his mom Eunice and dad "Pete" Moser would visit Grandpa James in Wisconsin quite often, and after Anne died Eunice told James to come live with them. Grandpa liked Eunice's husband pretty well. James was very stubborn, got mad and held grudges for a long time. He stayed mad at at Harold Jr. for 3 months, not talking to him, and they lived in the same house!
James told Harold that his dad David Houchin drank. James did his share of drinking and bootlegging as well. Harold did not know of any time that James visited his father, and really didn't have much to say about him. He talked about his half-sister Mabel, and half-brother Glen Reed is also mentioned in his obituary, but it appears that nobody in the family knew about David's other children. Harold remembers when they all visited James' sister Mabel Crandell, in Cheyenne, OK for three days.

James Houchin
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Bonnerup & Son Funeral Chapel for James L. Houchin, 81.
A resident of the Good Samaritan Center for the last year. Mr. Houchin died at 12:35 p.m. Friday at Naeve Hospital. He had been in failing health for the last year and had been hospitalized the past month.
He was born Dec. 25, 1885 at Shelby, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Houchin. Later he lived in Burwell, Neb.; in South Dakota and Lancaster, Wis.
He came to Minnesota in 1929 and had lived at Mora before coming to Albert Lea.
He was a farmer and worked in construction until retiring.
He was preceded in death by two daughters and a son.
Six daughters and three sons survive. The daughters are: Mrs. Harold (Eunice) Moser, Blooming Prairie; Mrs. Nels (Dorothy) Oquist and Mrs. Vera Wessels, Albert Lea; Mrs. George (Lucille) Martin, Popular, Wis.; Mrs. Harry (Hilda) Podberg, Morris and Mrs. Bert (Janice) Ingvaldson, Oakland.
Surviving sons are: Alvin D. Houchin, Albert Lea; Erwin D. Houchin, Mason City, and Ernest E. Houchin, Glenville.
A sister, Mrs. Worth Crandell, lies at Cheyenne, Wyo., and a brother, Glenn Reed, at Henry, S.D.
The Rev. Fred Jacobsen will officiate at services. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
