Richard Saye and his wife, Mary Ho dge, left Reading,Pennsylvanita and settled in what is now Union County, SC about 1773. Hesee med to have been doing well when the Revolutionary War broke out. He,"like all Presbyterians, " [quoting Asbury W. Saye] volunteered. He wasregularly in the service until he fell in the s iege of Savannah 9 October1779. He was buried on the Carolina side of the Savannah River. H e left awidow with the care of seven children. Mary Saye was robbed and plunderedof her prope rty by the Tories during the Revolution but seemed to be awoman of great endurance who knew h ow to manage her affairs. Shecontinued in SC until about 1794 (Union County Deed Book 12, p . 295) MarySaye and son James sold land bought by Richard Saye (Deed Book B. p.141), 1773, wh en he gave his home as Province of North Carolina, Roan(Rowan), recorded 1787. The Reverend J ames Hodge Saye is believed to bethe author of a manuscript which says, "The late Richard Say e of GwinnettCounty, Georgia was born in Union District, SC in June 1777. He was theson of Ri chard Saye and his wife, Mary Hodge. They were brought up inPennsylvania and married there, b ut [tear] first to North Carolina andthence to SC and settled [tear] the bounds of the Fairfo restcongregation. Of this church, they were members. Mr. Saye was killed inbattle at Savanna h in 1779 leaving his widow with seven small childrenjust prior to the most disastrous poin t of the Revolutionary War to thatsection of the country in which they resided. Widows and orphans [?] "inevery part of the coutnry for the [?] generosity [?] solide rs whosurvived the [?] in every way to aid the widows and orphans of theirfallen comrades." A bout 1780, soon after the death of his father, Richardand the Saye family moved from Pennsylv ania southward through Virginiaand North Carolina, settling for a time in Burke County, Nort h Carolina, where they lived on the banks of the Catawba River. They soon moved onand settle d on Mitchell's Creek in what is now Union County, SC. Marymoved to Georgia, near New Hope Ch urch. This church was organized by theReverend John Newton, the first minister to settle perm anently in theupper part of Georgia. The first elders of New Hope were Samuel Woods(whose wil l is recorded in Hall County, Georgia), Samuel Long and WilliamHodge. They had probably bee n ordained to the eldership before leavingCarlisle, Pennsylvania or SC. In 1789, William Luck ie (believed to be thefather of Mary Luckie) was received as an elder from Long Cane Church,A bbeville, SC. William Luckie died in 1797 at Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Will Book A, p. 62. N ew Hope Church was made up almost entirely ofCumberland County, Pennsylvania people. The ver y first immigrants to theneighborhood were George Elliott Sr. and his five sons and hisson-in -law, Stephen Gardner, and a few others who came and settled on thefork of Broad River. Man y others followed in the two years following.Among them were Elders David Ewing, Allan Leeper , Samuel Wood, WilliamHodge, Samuel Long, Jacob Adam, David and George Eberhardt, Robert andJ ames Griffeth, Robert Woods, a brother of elder Samuel Woods, AlexanderThompson and his two s ons, James and William, the widow Saye and hersons, James and Richard, and her daughters, Peg gy and Sarah (wife ofJames Thompson). Richard Saye Jr. married Margaret Gardner, agranddaught er of George Elliott Sr. James Saye married ElizabethCarithers, the daughter of Robert and Ma ry Luckie Carithers. UnionCounty, S. C. Deed Book "B" p. 141 shows that Richard Saye bought l and inSC when he showed Roan (Rowan) Conty, North Carolina as his home. Grantor James Say and Mary Say, hismother, of Union County, SC t o Richard Harris, Union County, NorthCarolina, 60 pounds sterling. Richard Say, deceased. Inf ormation fromAsbury W. Saye (written in 1898): The best account of mygreat-grandfather Saye t hat I have procured is that he probably came overfrom England about the year 1755. Among th e immigrants that came overwith him was a family by the name of Hodge. After their arrival in Pennsylvania, he married Mary Hodge. The Hodges and Richard Saye moved toYork District, SC (c ounties were called districts at that time). There inthe graveyard of Fair Forest Church li e the remains of mygreat-grandmother Hodge, and I suppose many of her descendants. RichardSay e and his wife, Mary, settled in what is now Union, SC. Richard seemedto have been doing wel l when the Revolutionary War broke out. He, likeall Presbyterians, volunteered his service t o his adopted country. If theinformation is correct, he was regularly in the service until h e fell inthe seige of Savannah in 1779, the 9th of October, leaving a widow withthe care of s even children. There was a great deal of bitternessmanifested between the Whigs and the Torie s in the days of theRevolution. These parties went by the name of the political parties inEng land. The Whigs opposing the oppressive measures of parliament andKing George III. The Torie s favored the Crown in his measures of hightaxation and that without being permitted a repres entation in Parliament. My great-grandmother was robbed and plundered of her property by theTo ries but seemed to be a woman who knew how to manage her affairs. Shecontinued in SC until ab out 1790 when she moved to Georgia near New HopeChurch. That is the church organized by the R ev. John Newton, the firstminister who permanently settled in the upper part of Georgia. Thec hurch, built in 1788, stood until 1858, 70 years, when it was torn downand replaced by one oc cupying the same spot of sacred ground. Onedaughter who married in SC came one year before he r mother. Some of herchildren had married in SC, but all came to Georgia with her. She hadbee n left with seven children, three boys and four daughters. The sonswere named James, Willia m and Richard. Richard was the youngest, Jamesthe oldest. James Saye, the oldest son, marrie d Miss Caruthers. They had14 children, raised all but one. James settled on Walnut Fork of th eOconee River, first in Jackson County and then moved up the same streaminto Hall County. The re he made considerable wealth, but through somemismanagement, lost most of it in his lifetim e. James died in 1850 (willrecorded in Hall County). He has now (1898) but two children livin g, oneRichard Saye of Atlanta and Adaline of Athens, Georgia. Wifes Notes...Notes: Mary Hodg e is listed in the 1790 census for District 96 of UnionCounty, North Carolina. The househol d included two males under 16 andthree females, including herself. These were probably Willia m, about 15,Richard, 13, Margaret, 22 and unmarried, Mary, about 11and the widowedMary. Abou t 1794, Mary sold her plantation in Union District and joinedher children and others of thei r SC relatives and neighbors in moving toGeorgia. Mary settled on the South Broad River, abou t two miles from thepresent town of Danielsville in Madison County, Georgia. The ReverendJame s Hodge Saye, Mary's grandson, wrote, "By dint of untiring industry,Mrs. Saye succeeded in ra ising her family and giving them the rudimentsof a common English education. Her great care w as to instruct them in theprinciples of religion. She was a devout and lively Christian. Th e [?]remembers her as she was at the age of [four score?] her habits ofindustry, punctiliou s in the discharge of religious duties, a devout andregular attendant upon the ordinance, ref ined in manners and possessing astore of useful knowledge rarely surpassed.
