AMES WESLEY ELLIS:
Was an extensive farmer, and became a member of the Baptist Church, at Boyd's Creek, when thirty years of age, and after a devoted Christian life and a married life of sixty-three years, he died at the age of eighty-six, the first death in his family." --from "Goodspeed's History of Tennessee," published by Charles and Randy Elder Booksellers, Nashville, Tennessee.

Listed as "Ellice" in 1830 Census.

In 1850 had land valued at $3500 and had a physician living with him and his wife and 5 sons. The physician's name was William McNutt.

In 1860 had real estate valued at $12,400 and personal property valued at $3073.

"They were frugal and industrious in their habits and accomplished much in their day and geration. Relgiously they were Protestants and for many years communicants of Boyd's Creek Baptist Church.

These our progenitors were sturdy and industrious people and were much respected by all who knew them." --J.J. Ellis

According to land records found in Sevier County Court House he made many land transfers in the county. His father, Christopher Columbus Ellis, either bought or was granted land in the county before records were kept, but one of the deeds made by James and recorded a short time later refers to the fact that C.C. Ellis owned land. A notation as follows was found:
"This description (of a tract of land) is based on a survey of the land of Christopher Columbus Ellis." In many cases it would appear that James was making transfers among the family members as if he were acting as an administrator, but the word "adminstrator" was not actually used.
Buried at Boyd's Creek Cemetery, Boyd's Creek Baptist Church, Seymour, Tennessee
