Notes for Hugh BROWN: Hugh and Ruth Brown were Methodists. They attended the First Methodist Church in Maryland at Sams Creek in 1760. The preachers name was Robert Strawbridge. They moved from Pipe Creek, MD to Hancock, VA in a place called Holiday Cove (about 1789), from there to Cross Creek, Jefferson Co., OH (by 1804).
Hugh drowned in the Ohio River and was burried in the Presbyterian cemetery in Steubenville, OH. He helped farm Brown's Island, which was owned by his brother Richard. He also lived in a log cabin on the West Virginia side of the Ohio River across from Brown's Island. Just before leaving Maryland to come west his home burned to the ground. He lost his son Barney, who was five at that time, and all of his other possessions were lost. He came west penniless.
1788-Sold their share of Brown's Plague" which Hugh had inherited from his father to his brother Henry.
1804 - Sold the land he owned to Thomas Barney.
