HARLES FORTEN DEXTER FAYETTE SMITH:
Reference #4
o There was 11 brothers and sisters in the family, and all of them wanted to name him, hence the several middle names.

oChareles F. Smith(according to Edgar Smith in the summer of 1971 and 1986) was born and brought up in Victory, Vermont. (According to son Lord Arleigh) Ran away with brother Dan to join the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. He took his red drum with him. An officer on the train sent him home because he was too young. Played the drum at home. After marriage to Celinder Fisk they lived on Fisk place in North Littleton off Mann's Hill Road.

He built a grocery store on present Howard & Lillian Smith (no relation) property on Chushman Brook. In 1861 on this site there was a grist mill; a starch mill was a quarter mile further down the brook. He had a log house. In 1892 he built a home like the "Cornel" Chushman house (now burned) on Howe (Tom McAuliffe) property. Lord Arleigh was the only child to be born there. He kept the store until wife died in 1897. Maude Cushman Emerson remembered (in 1971) that Celinda Smith was a helpful and good neighbor to Cushman family that lived nearby (on Walter Moore property. Maude remembered Celinder's funeral.

Charles had a cider, wheel wright and shingle mill; also shod oxen, made sleighs and wagons (also the wheels for them). As school boys Orin and Arleigh worked in the mills with their father bunching shingles while father and brother Thomas did the sawing. The mill was built about 1890-91, sat on a stone foundation that was part dam of which some stones are still visible today (Lillian Smith property). A log crib dam extended beyond the building foundation. The cider press was operated by water power as was the saw mill. Building was latter dismantled by Thomas and Orin Smith in 1920.

Charles had an artistic ability and could stripe a wagon wheel freehand or decorate a sleigh. (according to Gordon M. Ellis,(in 1963-4) his grandfather (Grand papa), told him about his father carving beautiful designs in the dashboard of sleighs; and showed him the wood chisels he used that are still in the old wooden tool box that Grand papa willed to Gordon. The chest was said (by Viola Smith Ellis Rines) to have belonged to Charles and perhaps to his father).

In 1895-1900 Charles built a barn on the old McGinty place, where son Thomas and his wife Lizzie lived. He hewed the beams from logs, mortised and tenoned them by hand, put them together with wooden pegs. As a young boy Orin Smith could remember the barn raising.

Recollections of Edgar C. Smith (8/3/1974) Updated by Shirley Nichols (1991): (Reference #4E)
Charles F. Smith's house built by himself: White, square house with a gable at each end towards the brook. A door is in the left hand corner entering into a hallway leading directly upstairs. Down stairs, turn right into living room. A long attached 'EL', to right (north) when facing the building. A porch along the front and entrance to the general store that was part of the 'EL'. Across end of 'EL' and sticking out enough for carriage entrance doors was carriage house, underneath was a small stable for horse, cows and pigs. Wheelwright and shingle mill (water powered) set directly across driveway from front entrance of main house.

C.F. Smith settled on present Howard & Lillian Smith place October/November 1888 or 1891 or 2. He built a cider and shingle mill and wheelwright shop. Ran a grocery store in 'EL' of house until about 1906. A barrel of flour was needed a week for a family.

After his death in 1921, his daughter Phoebe Rooney moved into the house and lived there several years. Her daughter Ella Little moved in and lived there from 1921 to 1928. Charles and Lula Tibet lived downstairs in the house several years. Sam Bacon, Sr. came in 1929-31. After his death wife Effie and two daughters (Mrs. Carl McCullock) and son , Sam, Jr., continued residence. Sam, Jr. owned the place until early 1950s'. Howard and Lillian Smith brought property (about two acres) from Whitefield Bank. One acre was deeded to son Wayne and wife Nancy, daughter of Edgar and Vera Smith, in 1977.
