Jeremiah Ellis I (son of Edward Ellis and Eliza (Ellis)) was born March 07, 1643/44 in Surry Co. Va, and died Abt. 1722 in Surry Co. Va. He married (1) Mary (Ellis) on Abt. 1668 in Surry Co,. VA.

The birth dates of Jeremiah Ellis I children, Dixie L. McCrary calculated from the land records and tithe lists of Surry County, Virgina. "Date of birth for each son listed above calculated from first tithe list on which his name appears, assumed to have been year in which that son reached age of 16 years."
She also states that there is a Benjamin Ellis that may have been Jeremiah I's son or Jeremiah II's son.
Jeremiah I disposed of most of his land to his sons before his death.
Jeremiah was sworn as sub-sheriff for Surry County on May 2, 1682. He and his son Jeremiah II were listed in the Surry Militia, 1687.
From The Heritage of Iredell County, North Carolina, Volume One, page 275, contributed by David Ellis: "Both Jeremiah [I] and Jeremiah [II] Jr. were active in Bacon's Rebellion."

JEREMIAH ELLIS, son of Edward Ellis, served as sub-sheriff of Surry Co., Virginia (sworn in on 2 May 1682) and he served in the Surry Co. Militia in 1687. He also participated in the famed Bacon Rebellion in 1676.

(SurryCounty Deeds of 1671-84, pg. 244) ~~~~~~~~~~ Occupation: Planter and sub Sheriff for Surry co (Sworn in 2 May1692) Both Jeremiah ELLIS I and II served in the Surrey Militia 1687.
Jeremiah ELLIS is also listed as having a second wife in 1704, aSarah HARVEY. Note however that all chuildren's birth datespreceed her, so Mary -?- is their nother, most likely.
Jeremiah ELLIS is involved in the uprising known as Bacon'sRevellion, having been a friend of one of the ones who began itand having witnessed in court to that fact and having heardreferences to it and testifying to that fact.
