2. JAMES JASPER² SMITH (JORDAN¹) was born November 16, 1823 in GA., and died September 25, 1903 in Harris Creek, McGregor, TX. He married CATHERINE (CANCYANNE) RATHEL 1876 in Pike County, AL, daughter of JAMES RATHEL and KATHERINE SMITH.

Notes for JAMES JASPER SMITH:
Family Bible record and will of Jordan Smith [shown here as father of Jasper Jodan] cause me to think that the name Jasper Jordan for his first son is very unlikely. Bible record has abbreviation "Jas. J. Smith" [which MIGHT be Jasper] with this birth date, but J. Jordan Smith's will, though difficult to read, appears to have "James J. Smith" or "Jame J." for this son.

Since the youngest son was named JORDAN DeKalb [and the eldest son was still living at the time], it would seem unlikely that the eldest would also have the name Jordan. Is the correct name Jasper Jordan, or is this J. Jordan Smith NOT our ancestor???

December, 1998: Received notes and materials from Wendell Reeves [son of Leon Kirby Reeves and Murl Cubley, dau. of Wm. Thos. Cubley and Katherine Smith, dau. of Catherine Rathel and J.J. Smith]. He has found nothing to support the name of Jasper Jordan, but much to suggest that the correct name is James Jasper. e.g. a copy of death certificate for his grandmother [Katherine Smith Cubley] shows father's name as James J. Smith.

THEREFORE, as of today's date [12/14/98] I am changing the name of my g-gf in these records to James Jasper Smith, and will do so on FTM online records soon.
