I descend from John Elton and Jane Hall who settled in Middletown, Connecticut about 1670. My line of the family descends from James Elton 1770-1840 and his wife Damaris Burr 1769-1860 who migrated to New York state around 1795. James Elton was instrumental in bringing the Methodist Episcopal Church to Conesville, NY in the early 1800's. He was the son of Ebenezer Elton III.

James and Damaris had three sons, Solomon, Lyman and John and one daughter Clarissa. A fourth son, James who was a twin of Clarissa died in 1808 at age 3 yrs. Solomon married Amy A Munroe and migrated to Groton, OH where they raised 8 children. Lyman and his wife Betsy remained on the farm in Conesville. John (my GG Grandfather) married Jane Catherine Greene and settled in the Catskill, NY area where he became a Methodist Episcopal minister.

I'm working on a few mysteries regarding some of my GG Grandfather's children and their families after the year 1849. They became orphans when Rev John Elton died in Cairo, NY. Their names in birth order were Mary, Catherine, Emily, William (my G Grandfather), Eliza Jane, Sarah, Emiline and Abigail.

The spouses of The children of Rev John Elton were:
Mary - married Jacob C Palmer,
Catherine - married 1st Edgar Spicer and 2nd Almon Whiting,
Emily - never married,
William - Married Martha Horton,
Eliza Jane - married Franklin F Brand,
Sarah - married Archibald Brooks,
Emiline Augusta - married J. M. Lent and
Frances Abigail - married George A Garrison.

I hope to determine their descendants at least to the year 1920.

Within 2 to 3 generations, the descendants of James and Damaris had settled in various locations in the east, midwest, west coast and as far south as Arkansas, Oklahoma and Southern California. I have had correspondence with several of them and am a close friend of one of them.

My long term project is to compile census records for the entire Elton family in the United States. To date the records are complete through the 1850 census. From 1860 to 1930, about 70% of the census index data have been compiled and about 30% of the actual census records have been examined and recorded including the entire census of 1900.

I would be happy to correspond with other Eltons who are studying the family and to share data with you.

Regards,
Ed
