The ELVERY name first appears in Kent, England in the late 16thC. Most probably the family were Walloons or French protestants from Belgium who sought refuge from religious persecution in England.Members of the family eventually found their way to the London area and during the Industrial Revolution to Birmingham (as Chimney Sweeps).Late in the 19thC family members emigrated to Dublin in Ireland; Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Bundaberg in Australia; Saskatchewan and British Colombia in Canada; and New Zealand.Early this century there was further emigration to Ontario in Canada; South Africa; and to the United States of America.Since 1965 I have been in contact with numerous family members around the world and my research has developed into a study of the ELVERY name worldwide. This year(1998) I have been encouraged to commence writing the family history. Of course there are still many gaps and I would welcome submissions from any who have not as yet provided me with details of their branch of our great family.
