The only child of two only children and the last living member of my immediate family, I was born and raised in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I am the last direct descendant with the surname of ELWOOD, of John Wesley ELWOOD, of Canada. I am searching for information on the family of Clarence Wesley ELWOOD, Sr., my paternal grandfather. Born in Buffalo, NY on May 18, 1893, to John Wesley ELWOOD and Dora HAHN. He had one sibling, a sister Emily, born the year after. The family can be found on the US Census taken in Pittsburgh in 1910 and 1920. The 1920 census shows Emily with the married name of HOLLINGER, living with her parents, and her young daughter, also named Emily M. HOLLINGER. No mention is made of her husband. Emily took her father John to Florida to live. I have found his death certificate there and have also located a copy of the Lake Worth city directory for the year of his death. It shows that he lived with a Emily DuBard and her husband.
The ELWOOD's are proving to be a difficult branch to trace. I have found records stating that ELWOOD can be Irish as well as English. The 1900 census in Buffalo states that both my great grand parents were born in Canada and immigrated in 1892, the year of their marriage. John Wesley's father was from England and his mother from Germany. Both of Dora's parents were from Germany.
On my maternal side, my great grandfather, David Oliver SMITH was born in Washington, PA in October of 1854, to David G. SMITH and his wife Elizabeth, who was from Ohio. He married Alice ROBINSON, of Pittsburgh,PA, who was born in May of 1860. Alice had a sister, Laura Belle ROBINSON, who married Isaac R. CARVER.
An interesting side bar to the CARVER line. In July of 1912, friends of Isaac and Laura's, Mr. & Mrs. J.C. Godfrey, took them, and their 18 year old son, Stanley, for a day trip to Crawford County, PA in their open touring car. Laura was killed when control of the car was lost and it rolled over. I was able to secure a copy of an article written by a local newspaper, which was very extensive in it's coverage due to the fact that Isaac was the chief plumbing inspector for the City of Pittsburgh at that time, and Mr. Godfrey was a prominent plumbing contractor.
My maternal grandmother, Theresia TIMMENS, was born February 11, 1891 on Park Row in the town of Felling,Gateshead,Durham,England. Her parents were Matthew TIMMENS, of Newcastle, Northumberland and Emma Caroline HOGG, of Dover, Kent, England. Matthew's father, James D. TIMMENS, who lived with them at the time of my grandmother's birth, was discovered to have immigrated to England from Ireland. More Irish blood ! An 1891 census shows my great grandfathers brother, Thomas, born in Bishop Aukland, also living in the house in Felling. By 1893 my great grandparents brought their children to Western Pennsylvania.
Immigrating with my grandmother and her parents were my grandmother's full sister, Ann, who married Huey HORNER and one half sister, Edith BRICKENDEN, who married Joseph BISHOP. Both marriages took place in Pittsburgh, PA.
Edith was from my ggmothers first marriage to Mark George BRICKENDEN, of Folkestone, Kent, ENG. As of the 1881 English census, Emma and Mark had 4 living children, the youngest, my grand aunt Edith.
After my great grandfather TIMMENS passed away in 1894, great grandma remarried out of neccessity. Samual PARKS had one son, John, and three daughters, Laura, Elizabth and Anna, to raise after his wife died. It seemed to be a good business relationship.
Take a look at my family reports before you leave. Perhaps you might make a connection.
