The African American Elzey Family originated in Somerset County, on the Eastern Shore Of Maryland. Exactly who the first one was to take on the surname has not been determined. Existing documents show that the surname was in use as early as 1767. Samuel Elzey, born that year, and 13 other Elzey's are listed in a survey of free blacks in Somerset County, conducted in 1832, to determine who wanted to be sent to Liberia, West Africa. |
