Sampson COLE (b. March 17, 1749/50, d. June 25, 1833)

1773 to Keziah Cole, who was b. about 1752 and d. about 1781, the daughter of Israel Cole III, a
descendant of Daniel Cole of Eastham, MA, and Remember (Burgess) Cole [Belden Ray Cole, p.
32]. Keziah d. when she fell from a horse with her son David in her arms [Jones MS. p. 13]. Sampson m. (2) Lydia Wheeler, the daughter of James and Abigail Wheeler of NY and VA.

He was a mill operator and surveyor; in 1783 he was constable of his district, and he surveyed the road to the salt mine, now called Saltville, VA. He managed Love's Mill from the time his father established it until he severed both hands, the injury from which he died. [Belden Ray Cole, p. 32].
Sampson and his family lived in Washington Co., VA; when Smyth Co. was organized in 1832, his land was in the new county.
Sampson d. 25 June 1833, aged 78 years, 3 months, 8 days; Lydia d. 25 March 1841, aged 71 years. Their gravestones still stand in the small cemetery near the Blankenbeckler School below St. Clair Bottom Church near Adwolfe.
Redmond Cole says Lydia was b. about 1770, which he no doubt calculated from her gravestone. However, this is probably incorrect, as she would have been only 11 years old when her first child was born. Possibly the gravestone is incorrect or the numbers worn.
In Sampson's will, written 22 Feb 1833, he provides for his wife Lydia Cole; his sons David, Jesse, and James Cole; and his daughters Keziah Williams, Martha Cole, Anna Stalcup, Elizabeth Patterson, Abigail Tilson, and Freelove Anderson. He names his son Jesse and his sons-in-law, Andrew Patterson and Hugh Cole, as executors. He also mentions his deceased son Joseph Cole and three slaves, Israel and Jacob, whom he wants to choose their own masters and not be sold at public sale; and Fanny, whom he frees and provides for Out of the funds of his estate. The will was proved on 18 July 1833. [Smyth Co. The son Sampson names as deceased, Joseph, was not included in Redmond Cole's abstract of Sampson's will [Redmond Cole, Mayflower Brief, p. 83]. Possibly he overlooked his name in the will. William Jones does not mention Joseph in his manuscript either. Since Joseph was not named in Israel Cole's 1792 will when he named the children of his daughter Keziah (discussion below), Joseph was either deceased at that time or was the son of Sampson's second wife, Lydia. Sampson's will directs the sale of "three tracts or parcels of land one adjoining my home tract formerly belonging to my son Joseph Cole, deceased." If Joseph had died before 1792, he would probably not have been old enough to own land. Therefore, he was probably the son of Lydia.
One son, Samuel, was not mentioned in the will. Redmond Cole says: "There are abundant records showing that he had such a son. Samuel Cole went to live in Carter County Tennessee. There he acquired a tract of land. These lands he sold to his brother Jesse and 'went West'. At the time this will was drawn Samuel Cole was in the far west. This probably accounts for the fact he was not mentioned in the above will." [Redmond Cole, Mayflower Brief, Appendix I, p. 83]
Another possible son, William R. Cole, was also not mentioned in the will, nor is he mentioned by any other source but Clifton, who was told of William's existence by Myrtle Cole, husband of Ernest Cole, who was William's son. It is possible that this is incorrect information, so William is not listed below as one of the children.
The will of Keziah Cole's father, Israel Cole, was written on 13 June 1792 in Washington Co., VA, and proved 16 Oct 1792 [Redmond Cole, Mayflower Brief, p. 78-79, Appendix F, which contains the full text of the will]. In it he names the three children of Keziah in the order of their birth: Keziah Cole, Samuel Cole, David Cole.

iii. Anna Cole, b. _____; m. 28 Aug 1806 in Washington Co. to William Stalcup [Washington Co., VA, Marriages, p. 1&-he is listed as William Stalkup], the son of Peter Stalcup. They moved to Monroe Co., MO, were they left numerous descendants.
iv. Elizabeth Cole, b. 1796
v. Abigail Cole, b. 1799; m. 29 Jan 1818 in Washington Co. to William H. Tilson [Washington Co., VA, Marriages, p. 16]. He was b. 2 Jan 1799, the son of Thomas and Eunice (Hubbell) Tilson, and d. 14 Apr 1873; Abigail d. 24 Nov 1875 [Smith, pp. 14 and 27].They lived on the South Fork of the Hoiston River in VA and left numerous descendants.
vi. Freelove Cole, b. _____; m. Campbell Anderson [Jones MS, p. 3]. In Sampson's will, he says he wants his executors to "manage and provide that the residue of the legacy comeing to my daughter Freelove Anderson be solely applyed in such a manner as can possibly be practicable to the sole use of her and children only as its intended alone for that purpose."
vii. James Cole, b. _____; m. Nancy Brown, who "went off with the Shaking Quakers," her husband requiring her to take the children with her [Jones MS, p. 3]. Sampson specifies in his will that "when my son, James Cole receives Fifty Dollars from my estate, he has then received his full legacy from me. Therefore nothing more remains for him."

During 1864, Sampson and Billy Cole were returning from the Swenson and Swisher salt works, which were about eight miles west of Lometa in Lampasas County. They lived ten miles southeast of San Saba. Each of the boys was riding a pony and leading a pack horse loaded with salt. After they crossed the Colorado River and had gone about four miles, the two were attacked by five Indians and a bitter fight followed. Sampson Cole was wounded. They reported one Indian killed. Billy Cole took his brother into the thick brush, but the savages captured their horses. The Indians emptied the salt on the ground and carried the sacks away. Uncle Dick Kolb stated that the cattle licked the salt at this place so long, two sink holes were started that can still be seen.
Billy Cole went after a wagon and hauled his brother home. Many years after this fight an Indian grave was found about one mile from the battlefield, directly on the trail the Indians followed when they went away.
William Cole was born about 1570 in **Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland. He died about 1598. He married Susan Bale, who was born about 1564 in Littlebentley, Essex, England. They had a son James Cole

James Cole who was born in London, England. He married Mary Lobel about 1624 in England. James died about 1688 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA. Mary Lobel was born about 1604 in Lile, Nord, France. She was the daughter of Mattien Lobel. Mary died about 1660 in Plymouth, MA. James and Mary Lobel Cole had four children, James, Hugh Cole I, John Cole and Mary Cole.
Hugh Cole I was born about 1627 in London, England. He married Mary Foxwell, daughter of Richard and Ann Shelley Foxwell, August 8, 1654. Hugh died Swansea, Bristol, MA January 22, 1698-99. Mary was born August 17, 1635 in Scituate, MA, she died 1689 in Swansea, MA. Mary and Hugh had eleven children. Mercy, Experience, James, Hugh II, John , Martha, Anna, Ruth, Ebenezer, Mary and Benjamin. My ancestor was Hugh Cole.
Hugh Cole II, was born March 8, 1657/58 in Plymouth, MA. He married Deborah Buckland May 6, 1881 in Swansea, Bristol, MA. Deborah was born September 16, 1658 in Rehobeth, Bristol, MA and died November 7, 1724 in Swansea, Bristol, MA. Hugh died Feburary 17, 1737/38 in Swansea, Bristol, MA. Hugh and Deborah had ten children, Anna, Christian, Bethia, Deborah, Hugh III, Mary, Joseph, Lydia, James and Hannah.
Hugh Cole III, was born May 30, 1683 in Swansea, Bristol, MA. He married Martha Luther, daughter of Samuel Luther and Mary Abell, December 13, 1705. Martha was born December 9, 1681 and died 1765 in Swansea, Bristol, MA. Hugh died February 17, 1736/37 in Swansea, Bristol, MA. Hugh and Martha had seven children, Hugh IV, Nehemiah, Joseph, Martha, Peleg, David and Deborah.
Joseph Cole, Sr., was born May 3, 1716 in Swansea, MA. On May 1, 1738 he married Freelove Mason, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Barney Mason. Freelove was born November 14, 1720 in Swansea, Bristol, MA and died 1792 in Washington Co., VA. Joseph died April 22, 1785 in Washington Co., VA. It is believed that Joseph and Freelove are buried in Sinclair's Bottom Cemetery in the back under a pine tree. Between 1771 and 1774 Joseph moved to Washington County, VA and settled on the South Fork of the Holston River. Joseph and Freelove had seven children, Elizabeth, Joanna, Hugh Sr., Joseph Jr., Urania, Zacheus and Sampson.
Sampson Cole was born March 7, 1755 in Swansea, MA. Sampson's first wife was Keziah Cole, believed to be the daughter of Isreal Cole. They had three children. She was killed after the third child was born by a fall from a horse. Sampson purchased land in Smyth Co., VA as early as 1770. He then married Lydia Wheeler, who was born in NY. She was the daughter of James and Abigail Wheeler. Sampson died June 25, 1833 in Smyth Co., VA. Lydia died March 25, 1841 in Smyth Co., VA. They are both buried at the cemetery at Old Blankenbeckler School, north of South Fork of the Holston River, above Riverside and below Adwolf, Smyth Co., VA. Sampson and Lydia Wheeler Cole had eight children, Ann, Freelove, James, Joseph, Jesse, Martha, Elizabeth and Abigail.
Sampson Cole
Sampson was born March 17, 1750 in Swansea, Bristol, Massachusetts. He married first 1773 in Ulster, New York. Sampson purchased land in Smyth County, Virginia as early as 1770. He died June 25, 1832 in Smyth County, Virginia. Sampson and his second wife are both buried at the cemetery at Old Blankenbeckler School, north of the South Fork of the Holston River, above Riverside and below Adwolf, Smyth County, Virginia.
