The EMERSONS
Originally from Lincolnshire, England, ROBERT EMERSON, brother MICHAEL EMERSON, and sister ELIZABETH EMERSON settled in Haverhill, MA after emigrating to America during the mid-1600's.

In 1658, ROBERT EMERSON married ANNE GRANT. They remained in Haverhill where they raised eight children. In 1694, son Ephraim left Haverhill to settle in the Bristol County MA area.

In about 1695/6, EPHRAIM EMERSON married ELIZABETH WALKER of Taunton, MA. They raised their two children, Theodotia/Ephraim and Elizabeth, in Taunton MA. In 1725, THEODOTIA a.k.a. EPHRAIM EMERSON married ELIZABETH KING(?) and ELIZABETH EMERSON married SAMUEL ANDREWS (around 1720).

Our EMERSONS remained in Bristol County, mainly Rehoboth and Taunton, for many years. Around 1760 - 1765, THEODOTIA, along with his sons JOSEPH, BENJAMIN, and SAMUEL KING, left Bristol County for Sackville, Nova Scotia with high hopes of seeking land grants. Although they were successful in acquiring the land, by refusing to pledge their allegience to the King, they were eventually driven out of Canada. Theodotia/Ephraim, Joseph, and Benjamin returned home to MA, while Samuel King settled in Swan Lake, Maine.

Around the beginning of the 19th century, Joseph's son, EPHRAIM EMERSON and wife ANNA PECK EMERSON, migrated from the Rehoboth MA area to NY state -- first to Rensselaer County, then to Allegany and Steuben counties where they raised their nine children.

MARTIN A EMERSON, son of Ephraim and Anna, married POLLY OLDS in Petersburg, NY, and together they raised their nine children in Alfred and Scio, NY. Martin, wife Polly, are at peaceful rest alongside of son THOMAS RIX EMERSON and his wife JANE REED EMERSON in the Allentown cemetery, in Scio NY.

In about 1840, Martin and Polly's son, MARTIN E EMERSON, married MERCY LOVINIA BURDICK in Hartsville, NY. They raised their five children in Hartsville. After the death of his wife Mercy in 1858, Martin later married MARTHA SATTERLEE, daughter of DAVID SATTERLEE and CYNTHIA SAUNDERS. Together Martin and Martha raised seven children in the Hartsville/Alfred area.

WILLIAM S EMERSON, son of Martha and Martin, was born in Hartsville, NY in 1861, and married EMMA WEST, daughter of MARTIN VAN BUREN WEST and LUCY CORNELIUS of Wellsville. William and Emma raised three children in Hartsville -- FLORENCE, ARCHIE, and FLORA. Archie was my grandfather.

During the later part of the 19th century, again the EMERSONS began migrating, moving to Potter county, PA., Alconia county, MI., and also to Erie county, NY.

For the most part, many of the EMERSONS were members of the Seventh Day Baptist Church. Many EMERSON, SATTERLEE, and SAUNDERS names can be found in the membership records of the Seventh Day Baptist Churches of western NY and PA.

I have information to share on ROBERT, the immigrant, EMERSON and his descendants from about 1658 to current.

Additional information on any of the family names listed above would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at the e-mail address listed on this page.

Thank you.
