| My name is Robert Biscal EMERSON. My grandparents were Winiford Frank EMERSON, Roberta GRIFFITH, William Green DUKE, and Ruby LASLIE. I'm particularly interested in finding out about Winiford's family. According to family stories, his father was George Augustus EMERSON, who was supposedly connected to the new Union Pacific Railroad. His mother was Margarethe or Elizabeth VON GRABEL or VON GRABEN or Von GRANGER. Winiford probably was born in Springfield, Missouri. He had a brother, Charles EMERSON, who lived in Colorado. George Augustus EMERSON was said to be from England, and his wife from Germany. The story goes that Winiford ran away from home when he was 13 and became a telegraph operator. He may have lived with WALKERs. He joined Sousa's band as a tuba player. He also played the banjo. I think he met and married my grandmother, Roberta, in Tennessee. My father, Robert, Sr., was born in Nashville, Tennessee, March 17, 1909. |
