* "The EMERY/MARTIN Family Homepage"*

Updated September 6, 2000

I am researching the EMERY'S of South Dakota. They migrated west from New York State when James Emery (b. 1808 in England) & his wife, Hannah Townsend (b. abt 1815 in Penyon, NY), moved to Wadsworth, Lake, Illinois when they married in 1836. From there, one of their children, James Howard Emery (b. Oct. 1842 in Illinois), and his wife, Selena "Mary" Adams (b. 1853 in French Canada), moved to Alcester, Union, SD. They raised eight children there, including my grandfather, George Loran Emery (b. 1880 in Alcester). George married Lulu Benjamin (b. Dec. 1879 in Beresford, SD). Her parents were Daniel F. Benjamin & Sarah A. Goltry. George & Lulu had three children in the Beresford area, Clayton Virgil, Guida Irene & Loran Dale. Other family lines include Botsford, Forshee and Fox.
I am also researching the MARTIN Family of IA. My grandfather, Jay Emmett Martin, was born in Cambridge, Story, IA on Oct. 27, 1889. His father was Charles H. Martin (b. abt 1851 in Wayne Co., NY), and his mother was Almira Parish (b. abt 1855 in Cedar Rapids, Linn, IA). Before marrying Charles, Almira had been married to Thomas B. Hoffman in Ames, Story, IA. She had two children with him, Myrtle & Ora. And, according to my unproven records, Almira may have had a child out of wedlock by the name of Elmer H. Parish (b. 1871 in Guthrie Co. IA). After Almira died in 1893 in Cambridge, IA, Charles seems to have deserted the family, so Jay never knew his parents. He was raised by Louis & Mary Bell of Des Moines. Jay married Carrie Marie Frederick (b. 1891 in Elkhart, IA) in Elkhart in Feb. 1911. Her mother was Barbara Ann Andrews (b. 1868 in Himmelkron, Germany) and her father was Edward D. Frederick (b. 1858 in Melbourne, Australia). Jay & Carrie raised eight children in the areas of Elkhart and Hampton, IA. Carrie died in Postville, IA in 1975 and Jay died in Des Moines, IA in 1963. Other family lines include Hughes and Eickhoff.

I am building several family trees, and any help with any of these lines, would be greatly appreciated. I will soon begin to add them here, and will glady share any information which I have. Thanks very much.
