Notes for F
OUNDING FATHER EMO:
The Emo surname originated in the Republic of Venice and was derived from the name Aimo or Aimus.
The family is recorded in the "Encyclopedia Storica Nobilaire Italina" as having transfered from Vicenza to Venice in the year 997 AD. The name Emo was used in the 15th Century on all legal documents. There is an impressive history of military achievements down the centuries resulting in an array of awards and titles. In 1797 only one Emo family remained in San Moise, an area of Venice. After the fall of the Republic they moved to Padova on the mainland. In 1783 Leonardo Emo married Beatrice Capodilista, the last of her family. In 1821 their decendants, Giovanni Francesco, Giorgio Gasparo and Giordano Alvise Maria were confirmed in the nobility and elevated to the position of "Count dell'I.A. con. S.R.A." Both names were attached and the surname became ' Emo-Capodilista'. The present Count Emo Capodilista resides at Montecchia Castle about 20 mins from Venice.

In a lecture to the Harvard Club of Georgia, Jan. 1994, Carl I. Gable states that the Villa Emo is the only Palladian villa that has remained in the original family continuously since its construction. The Emo family, which came to Venice from Greece before the year 1000, produced civic and military leaders throughout the long history of the Venetian Republic.

It is still to be discovered at what point in time the Emo name travelled north in Europe. The largest concentration of Emo's is in the Normandy region of France and also in the Utrecht region of Holland.
This presentation to the World Family Tree, deals exclusively with that branch of the Emo family which evolved in Ireland from the 17th century and spread across the Atlantic to the North American continent.
The port of entry, for the majority of these immigrants was Montreal, Canada. Their descendants are to be found mainly in Quebec and Ontario.
The earliest date on record, is that of John Emo who is recorded as being a freeholder of property rights for voters at Milltown on 1st July 1747, and at Cloghan on 8th Feb 1751. It is possible that John may have been a founding father. However until more data is available, we present the following arrangement for the publication of the Emo Family Tree. All errors and omissions accepted, the Emo family tree is now available for additions and corrections.
