On February 15, 1912, A.J.'s left lower lip and surrounding glands were surgically removed by Dr. E. S. Judd, at the Mayo Clinic. Pathologic examination of the specimen revealed a squamous cell epithelioma of low-grade malignancy. On August 30, 1913, A.J. wrote the letter shown. A.J. returned in September 1913; examination revealed a small lump in the area which was removed on September 8, 1913. It consisted of scar tissue and no malignancy was found.
