George J. Engel ran for Polk County (Wis.) Treasurer as a Democrat in 1936. He was swamped by the Progressives, as expected, but the Inter-County Leader commented, "Mr. Engel is certainly a very fine gentleman and if the rest of the Democratic ticket were made up of men like him we Progressives could look for a good drubbing."
