Ancestors of Jonathan Roy Engdahl

Generation No. 2

      2. Roy Aurthur Engdahl, born April 20, 1923 in Sinclairville, NY; died January 09, 1996 in Busti, NY. He was the son of 4. Ernest William Engdahl and 5. Ruth Elnora Phillips. He married 3. Marion Edith Corwin December 08, 1951.

      3. Marion Edith Corwin, born April 30, 1930 in Elizabeth, NJ. She was the daughter of 6. John Archibald Corwin, Jr. and 7. Theresa Mae Gleim.

Notes for Roy Aurthur Engdahl:
He was always active in the church. In the early 1960's Roy and Marion helped start Lakewood Baptist Church, which at first met in their home at 1 Glenwood Avenue. He was the Sunday School superintendant, trustee, deacon, sound man, electrician, tenor in the choir, or whatever was needed. Later he and his friend John Rowe ran the nursing home church services every Sunday afternoon.

He loved animals, birds, trees, and exploring the outdoors. He planted trees all over his land, and ran the annual tree sale for the County Extension. He enjoyed taking pictures of wildlife and trees, and kept his albums carefully organized.

Although he would become nervous if any of the children or grandchildren did anything dangerous, he seemed to have no fear for himself. He would climb high up into trees or tall ladders to work with no hesitation. He built a sturdy treehouse for his children that was about 30 feet off the ground. I have an excellent picture of him at the top a a tripod made from three extension ladders lashed together, leaning over, and taking a picture of a curious formation at the top of a pine tree. We also have a very good close-up picture that he took of a male buffalo at Yellowstone, and another of a copperhead we almost ran over on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.

Roy was never much of a traveller. After he came home from the Navy he rarely travelled outside the county. One of the highlights of his life, however, was the two weeks he and Marion spent installing electrical wiring at the ABWE mission hospital in The Gambia, Africa (in the early 1990's?).

They say that when you get old and sick, your inhibitions are stripped away, and the "real you" then appears. During his last days in the hospital Roy suffered from several bouts of dementia. On one of these days he was taken down to the X-ray waiting room. When he saw all the other patients there sitting in wheelchairs, he concluded that it was time to conduct the Sunday afternoon nursing home service, so he started speaking loudly, "I'm glad you have all come to the service this afternoon...", led them in prayer, and sang "Amazing Grace". This is what was buried in his deepest heart of hearts -- to fearlessly and simply do for Jesus the task closest to hand, without regard for the opinion of man.
