Fran Marcus Entin giving data. May 5, 1996 Relationship; Paternal GrandDaughter. It was mentioned by Phil Marcus that the Russian name may have been Makai or Mackai. See change furthur down.( MORDECHAI) He was born about 1861 Wife was born in 1863.( date from 1900 census 0n June 6th. Address 69 Eldridge St.
Lower East side of Manhatten in NYC,NY. Married name; Fannie Marcus(Lena)
He died while Fannie (Stabinsky) was pregnant with their youngest son leaving her with six sons altogether. The baby was born in May 1897. She registered his Birth in Aug. 1897 and gave the address as 79 Eldridge St. as registered on Birth Certificate that I received.
The information from my Father's Naturalization papers, Declaration of Intention showed my Dad was born in Bialystok, Russia on March 25, 1888. His Brother Sam was also born there according to Sam's Son.
Benjamin was a bootmaker for the Czar(source; My nephew) was told by my Dad(Irving). He was a shoemaker when he came to this country.
The names and DOB of the children are;
Louis 1883
Sam 1886
Abraham 1888
Irving 1889
David 1894
Bennie 1897
Grandfather came to America 1889-1890 and Grandmother followed in 1893. There were no births between Irving and Dave.
Something happened at the neighborhood Shull (under renovation 1 year ago or so) after Grandfathers death and they grew up Atheists and never had anything to do with Jewish Tradition again. There is still the Bialystok Shull there but it is unlikely any 100 year old records are there.Mentioned above. On Sunday Oct. 13, 1996 Helen Lasus told me Our Father Irving told her he went to say Kaddish for his Father Benjamin Marcus and the Rabbi asked him if he had a bottle of Schnapps which he didn't so the Rabbi wouldn't let him in and Irving turned against the Jewish Religion.
I'm still searching for a Death Record.
I've seen the 1896-1897 list of buriels at Potter's Field on Hart's Island in NYC and his name isn't on it. There are many deceased with no known name.
July 5, 1996. An inquiry made by a helpful friend of Fran Marcus Entin's Conejo Valley Geneology group meeting, wrote to the Hebrew Free Buriel Association at 363 Seventh Avenue, New York,N.Y. Their response was that they did bury Benjamin Marcus in their Silver Lake Cemetary on Staten Island on March 12, 1897 in Grave 6, Row 5, section 7A.
My brother who lives in Cranberry, N.J., Dr. Bernard Marcus went to the Cemetary but it was so overgrown with weeds etc. he saw the Rabbi and gave him a donation to please clean up the area of the grave. Bernie went back with his son Ron and there was no grave marker of any kind but they were in the area where GrandFather was buried. The Rabbi said no one was buried there for 50 yrs. There is another more recent area at the cemetary available.
The death certificate spelled the last name Markus It gave Benjamin 'sparents names as Geron and Lucie( hard to read). It states he was ill with Tuberculosis Pulmorium Consumption for 3 mos.. It states he died on March 11, 1897 . He was 35 yrs old; that he was in the USA 7 years as well as NYC. His Mother's name is illigible as well as his Father's name. I asked the NYC Dept. of Records and information services Municipal Archives to decipher it for me from the original plase. Place of death looks like 120 Allen St which was the residence. It was a tenement. The Undertaker was J. Mentofsky 8 Bayard St. NYC., NY. The Dr. who attended him for the first time saw him on March 10th and he died on March 11, 1897 about 9PM. The Dr.'s name is illigible and he lived on Rivington St.
Phil Marcus told me in July 1996 by phone the Shtel the family came from by Bialystok was Viash De Cova.
On April 13, 1997 I found on the WWW Jewish Geneology website that Mordechai was changed to Markus in this country. It also stated that in the Avotaynu Publication on Soundex information that Daitch-Mokotoff is Mordechai and the number is 693
