Notes for O
F HANOVER, VA JOHN CLEMENT:
[johnclement_ofh.ftw]

HISTORY:
The name Clement comes from the Latin, meaning "merciful."
The Clements were in America as early as the 1600's in VA and in MA.
In Ireland, the name from 1289 on is associated with Leitrim and Donegal, a
well as County Derry.
In England, early Clements are found in Devonshire, Leicestershire, Rutland
and South Wales.
In Scotland, the name may also represent a branch of the Clan Lamont
(MacClement). The Lamonts were from Cowal in Argyllshire, and were founded by
Ferchar about 1200; sons Murdoch, Malcolm, Duncan. They were associated with th
towns Kilfinan, and Kilmory on Lochgilp. Other versions of the name were:
Lambie, Lamondson, MacClymont, and Meikleham. The name is a clan name of Gaels
and the badge is the Crabapple.
The Clan Lamont, or Lamond, is one of the oldest. Its Gaelic name is Clann
'ic Fhearchair, from Fearchar, who flourished in the 12th century. From his
grandson came the hereditary name, Lamont, which is derived from the Old Norse
for "Law-man," coming possibly from certain judicial functions residing in the
chief.
Holding wide lands in Argyll, they were at feud with the Campbells, who
stripped them of all lands save those at Toward; Toward Castle remaining their
seat. Taking advantage of the Civil War, the Campbells and others, in 1646,
again ravaged the Lamont lands; 200 Lamont clansmen and 30 Gentlemen were
hanged. It was these heinous deeds which finaly precipitated Argyll's executio
in 1661.
Among early Clements in Virginia were Jeffery Clements who was among the
first investors in Jamestown; he had a wife, Elizabeth, and a child. Other
early Virginia arrivals included John Clemens, transported in 1650 by Robt Blea
and Sam Elridge, Isle of Wight Co.
Our line appears first in King William County, Virginia and probably came
there from Gloucester County. It begins with John Clement, and his wife
Isabell, of King William and Hanover Counties. He was probably the son of John
and Elisabeth of Gloucester, who was, in turn, probably the brother of Benjami
of Gloucester.
Or, alternatively, John of Gloucester may in fact BE John of King William an
Hanover, brother of Benjamin. Elizabeth may have been a first wife, since
Isabell outlived John of Hanover by many years (more than 52!).
The parallel use of names between John and Benjamin's lines, and the
Clements of Surry, suggests that our family is related to the Clements of Surry
County, who are, in turn, probably related to the Jeffery who originaly
invested in the Jamestown colony. At this point in time (due to the loss of
records due to fire), this is educated speculation. The truth may never be
known.

(DPC_Note: John Clement Sr.'s will only survives because it was read into the
record during the probate of his son Simon's will in Granville Co., NC, in
1801--which was being contested by his descendants. Hanover is one of the
"burned counties" and the original will has long since been destroyed.)

(DPC_NOTE: The will of John Clement Sr. gave 1 shilling to Elizabeth, the widow
of his son Stephen Clement. Since he was the second mentioned child, this tend
to indicate that Stephen was the second senior male heir. Also, since the
bequest was only 1 shilling, it tends to indicate that Stephen's widow,
Elizabeth, was rather well off and did not need her father-in-law's financial
assistance.)
Per Mary Clement Douglas, "it would appear that Stephen of Goochland was th
son of John of Hanover (and) that Stephen died 3 years before his father; that
would make John of Hanover dying at 80 plus years, making his date of birth
about 1670. I would guess Stephen to be about 55 at his death in 1746. His
daughter, Joyce, was married in 1758 and was listed as a minor in his will.")

Some researchers believe that William of Amelia (d. 1760) was this same son
others think that William of Amelia was the son of Benjamin (or even John) of
Gloucester. Due to the loss of records due to fire, no proof exists either way

History of Pittsylvania Co., VA:
Captain Benjamin Clement, born 1700, was the son of William Clement of King
William County, who in 1735 patented 1,225 acres in Amelia County and moved wit
his family to the latter. William Clement was justice of the peace and sheriff
of Amelia. His will, proven in 1760, named sons Benjamin, William, John and
Francis; daughters Elizabeth Ford Ellyson, Anne and Barsheba Major. Benjamin
Clement married Susanna Hill, daughter of Col. Isaac Hill of King and Queen
County, and moved with his family to Pittsylvania (then Lunenburg) in 1748,
establishing his home at Clement Hill, a sharp knoll overlooking Staunton River
The knoll was an excellent site for a pioneer settlement in the wilderness, for
its elevation commanded a view of the river and countryside around and could be
well defended against marauding bands of Indians. Captain Clement died in 1780
and is buried at the foot of Clement Hill; his estate was appraised at £27,604.
In his will he named wife Susanna, and children: 1. Stephen Clement.   2. Isaa
Clement, married Anne Denham. 3. Adam Clement, married Agnes Johnson of
Louisa County. 4. James Clement. 5. Benjamin Clement. 6. John Clement. 7.
Rachel Clement, married  Capt. Joshua Abston. 8. Elizabeth Clement, married
Isaac Butterworth. 9. Susanna Clement, married William Evans. The old mansion
house at Clement Hill, with its corner fireplaces, typifies a very early period
of architecture. Charles Clement, a son of Adam and Agnes Clement, inherited th
place; in 1803 he married Miss Nancy Hanby of Patrick and made his home there.
The property passed into the possession of John L. Hurt, through his marriage
with Nannie Clement, granddaughter of Charles Clement, Sr., and daughter of
Charles Clement, Jr., and his wife Lucy Hunt.
