Connie,

The following obituary was published in the Greenville News, Friday, January 8, 1937. It indicates that the father of John Landrum Eppes was Benjamin W. Eppes:

John Landrum Eppes, 80, life-long resident of this county, died at his home near Berea church at 2:00 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He had been ill three weeks.

Mr. Eppes was a son of the late Benjamin W. and Polly Ann O'Shields Eppes. During his years of activity he had been engaged in farming. He was a member of Holmes Memorial church of this city.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Sasrah Hester Eppes; five sons, the Rev. James F. Eppes of Kenly, N.C.; Samuel T. Eppes, R. C. and W. I. Eppes, of this city, and E. W. Eppes, of Taylors; three daughters, Mrs. R. A. Bayne, Mrs. J. B. Wade and Mrs. E. H. Wade, of this city. He is also survived by three dauthters-in-law, Mrs. R. R. Eppes, Mrs. J. B. Eppes and Mrs J. L. Eppes of this city and 49 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock from Holmes Memorial church, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Paul Beachan. Interment will be in Berea church cemetery.

The following will serve as active pallbearers: Clayborn Eppes, Clinton Eppes, Lloyd Eppes, Beattie Wade, Jr., Oland Bayne and Willis Bayne.

The honorary escort will be composed of the board of elders and deacons of Holmes Memorial church.

The body will be carried to the residence at 9 o'clock this morning to await the hour of the service.

Further announcements concerning the funeral plans will be made later by R. D. Jones & Sons, morticians.

Note that he was to be buried in "Berea church cemetery." He is buried at Nine Forks Baptist church. Either the Berea church became Nine Forks Baptist church or he was disinterred at some point and reburied at Nine Forks. In any event, the tie between John Landrum and Benjamin W. is solid.

Now, the tie between Benjamin W. and Daniel Eppes is not so solid but I'm certain enough of it that I have no difficulty carrying Daniel as the father of Benjamin.

The 1860 federal census for Spartanburg County lists Daniel Eppes and Benjamin Eppes on the same page, separated by only one other family. This would indicate that the two Eppes families lived very near one another. The census indicates the following in a single household:

Daniel Epps, age 68, born in Virginia
Mary, age 72, born in North Carolina
E___ Eppes, age 31, born in South Carolina
Mary, age 30, born in South Carolina
Amanda, age 8, born in South Carolina
Mary, age 4, born in South Carolina
Eliza A., age 1, born in South Carolina

Note that this would place Daniel's birth in 1792, not 1787 as I indicated to you earlier.

The same census page lists the following, one family away:

Benjamin Epps, age 34, born in South Carolina
Polly A., age 27, born in South Carolina
Isaac A., age 8, born in South Carolina
Oliver, age 10, born in South Carolina
John, age 5, born in South Carolina
Adaline, age 1, born in South Carolina

The above John, age 5, would be John Landrum Epps.

The 1840 federal census for Spartanburg County also lists a Daniel Epps as head of household but, instead of names and ages it lists numbers of males and females in the household and their age ranges:

2 males, 10-15
1 male, 15-20
1 male, 40-50

1 female, 15-20
1 female, 20-30
1 female, 50-60

The oldest male and female would be Daniel and Mary who would have been 48 and 52 at the time. The 2 males, 10-15, would be Benjamin and E___, whose name I can't decipher but consists of what appears to be only 4 letters. The 2 younger females, who would have been 20 years older at the time of the 1860 census, were probably married by 1860 and unless some other defining document shows up will remain unknowns. The same is true of the male, 15-20. He doesn't show up in Spartanburg County during the 1860 census.

This information is also to be found online LDS FamilySearch® Ancestral File (AFN: 156S-NHT)
