Obituary of Dr. J. T. Matthews:
"The subject of this sketch, Dr. John T. Matthews, son of Rev. Willis D. and Rebecca Matthews, was born February 3, 1830 in Campbell County, Georgia. He was in early life scripturally converted at Midway, Meriweather Co., GA., and at once united with the Methodist Church, and was a loyal, faithful and consistent member until called from the church militant to the church triumphant in glory. He studied medicine in Greenville, GA, in 1853 and attended lectures in Augusta, GA. In 1854 he went to Texas, and in 1858 returned to Alabama in April, and again took lectures in Mobile, AL. In September 1860, he was happily married to Miss Fannie A. Norwood, of Coosa County, Alabama. He practiced medicine in partnership with Dr. Solmon at Youngsville (Alex City) from 1860 to 1864, then moved to Kackneyville and practiced from 1864 to 1866, then returned to Alex City, and in 1871 removed to Coosa County, Alabama where he finished his useful and exemplary life as a citizen and Christian physician, November 7, 1914.
"He leaves a devoted wife and three children to mourn their loss. James Matthews and Mrs. J. D. Waldrop, of Coosa County, AL and Rev. K. W. Matthews of the North Alabama Conference.
"Dr. Matthews was a man of sterling worth. He was kind and thoughtful of his relations, and was proud of his family history. But is was in the quiet precincts of his own private home that the real beauties of his life displayed themselves. His thoughtfulness of their comfort, his tender sympathies and loving ministrations in their affliction and sorrows, made him the true and affectionate husband, the devoted and tender father and grandfather.
"He was laid to rest in Andrews Chapel Cemetery, after the funeral services conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. C. Godby, Rev. John W. Robertson of his own lodge, in hope of a glorious resurrection.
