I am researching my maternal family tree. Helen Louise Catherine Vreeland (b. 1917, m. Rupert Ray McGuire) came from a Dutch line (the Vreelands) and an English line (the Hutchinsons). The Vreeland side goes back to the 1600's, in part due to excellent records kept by the Dutch Reformed Church in Bergen, NJ. There are also various books about the early Dutch families (the Vreelands, Van Buskirks, Van Wagenens, etc.) as well as numerous websites and internet family trees, that have made my research since August 1999 possible. I am still scratching the surface of the huge Vreeland tree, I know...
The U.S. Vreeland progenitor, Michael Jansen Vreeland, emigrated from Holland in the mid-1600's and lived in New Amsterdam (lower Manhattan) and also in central New Jersey (Bergen County, Hackensack area). At the time, this was sparsely populated farmland, an outpost, really, from the Manhattan site, with Indians nearby who alternated between putting up with these invading and aggressive foreigners, and trying to massacre them at various times, a fate that Michael & family just managed to avoid.
I know less about my Hutchinson ancestors. They can be traced back 3 generations to Wales (William Jones, b. 1816) and 4 generations back to England (parents of children born in 1823 & 1825).
Surnames in my direct ancestor line include (by going back in generations, Vreeland side in caps):
Mother: VREELAND Grandparents: VREELAND, Hutchinson g-Gpts: (Above, plus) Jones gg-Gpts: (Above, plus) VAN RIPER, VAN BUSKIRK, Wright, Scott 3g-Gpts: (Above, plus) SICKLES, WINNE, VAN RIPEN, Blanchard, Roope 4g-Gpts: (Above, plus) TERHUNE, SIP, TOERS, 5g-Gpts: (Above, plus) VAN HOUTEN, VAN WAGENEN, VAN LONE, BASSETT, VAN WINKLE 6g-Gpts: (Above, plus) OOSTEN, BRAECKE, VAN VORST, HELMIGSE 7g-Gpts: (Above, plus) HARMANSE(?), JACOBS 8g-Gpts: (Above, plus) JANS, GERRITSEN, HERMANSE, ANDRIESSON 9g-Gpts: (Above, plus) IDES
This, as all genealogy research, is in progress, and began with my sister's direct lineage chart that she made about a decade ago. I have been adding siblings and side-branches as I can find them, usually via internet, and would heartily welcome any corrections, additions, subtractions, or other advice concerning research materials and sources. Feel free to e-mail me -- I enjoy the interaction w/ other genealogists!
ERRORS: Caution: I have not updated this site since Fall 1999. Some errors exist and I will add them here as I receive them from readers:
1) Sitske Dirckse Banta only married Dirck Johannes Vreeland, NOT Michael Johannise Vreeland (thanks, JMVreeland). Michael, son of Johannis Michielse Vreeland, was buried Jan 27, 1710, when Sitske was only 14 years old.
I have a much more complete database now (June 2000)and am always willing to share info. via e-mail. I'm also working on a Vreeland Family Project at the following location: http://www.angelfire.com/ab3/genealogyproject There, I'm collaborating with 2 other Vreeland researchers (Joan Vreeland Studer & Mary Lou Fischer) to produce, generation by generation, a full Vreeland family tree. Please visit and share your branches with us, if you'd like!
