History of Henry County VA page (169-170)Joseph Gravely, the ancestor of the Henry county family, was born in England in 1744. He and his two brothers came to America when quite young. He settled in the county prior to the Revolutionary War, and here he lived till his death at the ripe old age of one hundred years. he belonged to the "Landed Gentry" in early life, and Continued a farmer after coming to this county. He left quite a large estate. On this he had built the first brick chimney in this section, and it attracted visitors for miles around. He was a noted patriot that gave both of his time and means to help establish American Independence. In the list of Henry county soldiers, his name appears in that gallant body of men from this section of the State assisting Gen. Green at Guilford Court House. His descendants have inherited the qualities of the soldier, and haveproven worthy of bearing his name in every conflict to the present time. He married Eleanor, the daughter of Capt. francis Cox, Sept. 1, 1775. Of this marriage were: Jabez, Frank, Joseph, Jefferson, Eleanor, George, Edmund, Polly, Lewis, Peyton, and Willis.
DAR file for Sallie Ann Holman Mooore DAR ID No. 78032: Joseph Gravely (1744-1834) served as private in James Tarrant's company, Col. Abram Penn's regiment, Virginia Line. History of Henry County VA (page 170-171) Edmund Gravely, the twin brother of George, was born in 1788, and married Susan Robinson who was born in 1800, Issue: Mary Jane who married Elijah Richardson; Joe Morton never married; Eliza married Joseph Richardson; George, and William, neither married; Jabe married Anna Towler; Susan married John Belcher; Judith Elizabeth Gravely, the youngest child of Edmund, was born in 1844, married Capt. John Cox, of the Virgina militia, and only one child, Joanna, was the issue. The latter married Gustave A. Giles, died and left the following issue: Emma who married Henry Clay Eanes; Hary who married Fairy Law; Susan married Dr. F.Paul Turner, a dentist of Martinsville, Va; Elizabeth married William J. Childress; Richard married Woody Ramsey; Ruth married Alcin Fisher, of Montana; George, and Edmund, unmarried.

IGI says he was born abt 1795 in Leatherwood, Henry, Virginia History of Henry County VA (page 171) Lewis Gravely was born about 1795, and in 1822, or 3, married Martha Dyer. Their children were: Spottswood, who married Alice Williams,; Joseph Jackson Gravely, born about 1832, married Martha Marshall, a daughter of Dennis Marshall. He was elected to the legislature of Virginia over Geo. Rustyairston, later moved to Mo. before the Civil war, being a captian in the Union Army, elected member of Congress from that State, and also Lieutenant-Govenor, His children were: Benjamin, died in infancy, Nannie, Jackson, Joseph W., Pattie, Ella, Minnie, and Lutie. Lewis Gravely Jr., was born about 1830, moved to Mo., before the Civil War, married Sarah Sherrill. Issue: Eugenie Gravely, of Oklahoma; Eleanor married Mr. Donegan; Rachel Married a Cheatham, he died, and she next married J. F. Pedigo. Issue: Edd Pedigo. Martha was the first wife of J. F. Pedigo, Issue: Dr. Lewis G. Pedigo a distinguished physician of Roanoke, Virginia.; Emma Pedigo who married C. B. Gravely; Mary married Patrick Martin; Frank married Sallie Hughes Dillard; Thomas married Georgia Stultz; George D. married his cousin, Letitia Gravely. The father of this family was a distinguished citizen in his day, and with his brother Frank, took part in the War of 1812.

THE WILLIAM THOMAS FAMILY BIBLE by Elijah T. Sutherlin, Danville, VA 8/29/63 This Bible apparently was first owned by William Thomas Sr of Pitts. Co, Va. (I am omitting the rest of the description of theBible). Near the end of the Old Testament, appears to have been writtenaround 1860 or earlier: Nathaniel P. Thomas was born 24th day of August1798, Nathaniel P. Thomas departed this life May 18th, 1851. The followingwriting is inpencil, a more recent hand, which Mrs. George P. Hall statedthat she wrotepersonally: Joyce (Maggie) Thomas Hall was born Aug 23,1917 daughter ofGeorge Pat Hall and his wife Martha Thomas Hall. Writtenby her mother MarthaHall when she was 62 years old in 1951". This itemwas repeated twice moreat different places in this Bible but was not copiedherein. Thomas was born September 20th, 1826 JoyceThomas, wife of William Thomas, Senior, departed this life 3 of March,1829, age99 years, 8 months and twenty days. At the end of the Apocrypha,the following record appears: William Thomas, Junr. was born July 17 1796.Araminta Thomas, wife of W.P. T. was born May 17 1806
DEATHS; Wm P Thomas was killed at Drewes Bluff on the 10th of May, 1864. Brought home 20th of June & entered 22 of June 15 minutes after 2 ocin afternoon & was 27 years 11 months & 20 days old when he waskilled.
DEATH: Sarah E. Tanner, daughter of W.P. Thomas, his wife departed this life on the 10th of November 1866, died in Texas 39 years 6 months &16 days old. (Note by Mr. Sutherlin) Here is interwritten, in a paler handwhat appears to be "Pocohontas A. Thomas, and some other letters whichare illegible now. Also interwritten: "This the 24th of Sept. 1862" andunder this: "William N. P. Thomas"
Again some pencil writing appears: Here is a repetition of the notation by Mrs. Martha Hall regarding her daughter, Joyce (Maggie) Thomas Hall.The next items appear on the opposite page of the Bible. (No doubt Louisana).Note byMr. Sutherlin. Allen Motley Thomas was married to Miss Mary T. (Hereishole in the page about 3/8 of an inch wife and long). Lumpkin, Decr.the20 day 1870 Elsa M. Thomas was born the 7 day of April five after eleveno'clockin the year 1873 Creed T. Thomas was married to Miss Mary E. Gravleythe18 day Dec 1872 Miss Mary T. Thomas, wife of A . M. Thomas was bornthe30 day of June 1835 Allen M. Thomas was born the 20 day of Sept. 1826Rote this in the 46 year of his age.
