Notes for P
RESTON JOHN WRIGHT:
Some notes about Preston from his sons, Robert and Don

During the "dirty thirties", as the great depression years have come to be called in Canada, Preston and his twin brother Cecil boarded a train heading for Montreal, in search of work. The train stopped for water in Sudbury and the two of them got off to stretch their legs. Speaking with the local railway policeman, they asked about job prospects in Sudbury, and were told that INCO was hiring that very day!

They both were fortunate to get jobs - Cecil in the tire shop with the Frood Mine, Preston as a labourer in the Coppercliff smelter with International Nickel Company (INCO) in Sudbury, during 1937.

In 1938, Preston met the former Beatrice Coleman in Sudbury. Their first date was to take her to church. Bea worked as a domestic until they married, then they had five children, one of whom, Susan, was stillborn.

During his 34 years at INCO, he became a fully qualified journeyman electrician. He picked up a nickname "Smiley" early on because of his friendly outgoing manner. Later this changed to 'Mainliner' for the years he spent in the transportation department. However he was best know for the many years he was 'Wright the Electrician" at INCO, and around Sudbury.

In the early '40's, when the family needs expanded due to the arrival of three children, they bought a small house south of Sudbury, in Lockerby. In 1948, Preston built his 1 1/2 story family home on Martindale Road, which is still in the family today.

Tragedy struck in 1949, when their second daughter, Susan Christine, was stillborn at birth. However, the very next year Doreen was born, which was a godsend to them both.

Preston enjoyed travelling and brought his family 'back home' to Transcona Manitoba many times over the years. While Bea and Pres have been all across Canada, a vacation highlight was their 35th wedding anniversary trip to England in 1973, given to them by their children and families. Several years after that, he and his son Don vacationed in Europe. Preston and Bea travelled often to son Robert's cottage in the Haliburton Highlands, helping build and enjoy the cottage life experience.

Preston was a very generous, outgoing, family oriented man who helped out all his children in one way or another, asking nothing in return except love, and respect for his role as a father.

In 1978, Preston had the first of a series of strokes that eventually led to his passing on August 13, 1982. He is buried in Park Lawn Cemetery in Sudbury.
