Notes for NORMAN FULTON WRIGHT:
Recollections of Norman by his son, Raymond - March 2000:
The family moved from Oak Lake Manitoba to the Dugald district in 1921. He attended Suthwyn School (later closed, to make way for the Winnipeg Floodway) and worked the family farm with his brother Douglas. He married "Nellie" in 1941 and they resided in the family farmhouse, along with his parents.
They bought 80 acres of land from Fred Van Slyck as well as farming rented land from the Greater Winnipeg Water District. In later years he bought 120 acres of adjacent land from the Kalina family, removing the old house and building a new home on the site, around 1965. During his farming years he also worked at the C.N. Railway shops in nearby Transcona.
The land on which their new home was built was expropriated in 1968 by the water district to make way for a new reservoir serving the expanding needs of Winnipeg. Sad to have to leave their new home, Norman built an almost exact replica of this home in Transcona. They took great pride in thier yard, winning many landscaping awards and Ellen "Nellie" still lives and gardens there today.
Norman had many hobbies, including building furniture and water fountains and always loved a challenging game of pool on his regulation sized table. In 1978 he took early retirement from the CNR due to health, travelling to California the following year. In 1981, they took a trip to Hawaii and two weeks after returning, Norman died from a heart attack, at home.
