He married (1) Sandra(Sandy)MaeDeWitt July 8, 1956 in Millersburg, Ohio. She was born 1934 in Coschocton, Ohio. She was the daughter of Chester Howard DeWitt and Ella Marie Lamb.

James Robert Etherton, III (Jim), b. in 1933 in New Albany, Ind. Graduate of Male High School in Louisville, Ky. Was 1st trumpet & Band Colonel of the famous Male High School band. Attended the Univ. of Ky. on a music scholarship & became a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. In 1954 he was "Aide to the President" at the university graduation (an honor given to the junior ROTC student with the highest grade average in military science). He graduated in 1955 & married Sandy Dewitt, whom he met at the University. After serving 6 months as an Infantry officer at Ft. Benning, Ga., he returned to Lexington, Kentucky & taught band for two years at Lafayette Jr/Sr High School. In 1958, moved to Pensacola, Fl. teaching band & orchestra at Warrington Jr. High School for 4 years & Escambia High School for 6 years. In 1968 he joined the music department at Pensacola Jr. College. He directed the PJC Band; founded the PJC Jazz Ensemble & the Pensacola Civic Band (adult band), & attained the rank of full professor. Retired after teaching at PJC for 22 years (34 years of teaching).
He and Sandy have 2 children:
1.Jay DeWitt Etherton, b. 1958 in Pensacola. Graduate of Escambia H. S.; Pensacola Jr. College, U. of Central Fla., a masters degree from Fla. Institute of Technology. Computer software engineer for Harris Corporation. He & Carla have a daughter, Caitlin born 5/11/1987,Kelly Lauren b. 2/14/1996 & Kathryn Sandra b. 10/13/ 1998. They live in Melbourne, Fl.
2.Stacy Leigh Etherton, b. in 1963 in Pensacola. Graduate of Escambia High School; Pensacola Jr. College; & U. of West Florida. Taught kindergarten at Scenic Heights Elem. in Pensacola. Married to David Fowler, a chemist for Ciba Chemical Co. in Alabama. They live in Satsuma, Alabama and have 2 sons, Cody James born 5/9/95 & Cole Edmond born 7/16/98.

Sandra Mae DeWitt Etherton (Sandy) was born in Coshocton, Oh. in 1934 & raised in Millersburg, Oh. She attended Millersburg high school where she was a member of both the golf & girls basketball teams. Her senior year she was "homecoming queen" for the high school. She graduated from Millersburg High School in 1952, becoming one of three generations to graduate from the high school (her father Chet & her grandmother Lucy graduated from the same high school).
She attended Miami University of Ohio for two years & became a member of Chi Omega sorority. She was captain of the girl's golf team & in 1954 represented Miami at the "National Intercollegiate Golf Tournament" at the famous "Greenbriar" golf course. She transferred to the University of Ky. where she met Jim (her roommate at Miami, from Louisville also transferred). She won the women's intramural golf title both of her years at U. of Ky. Her senior year she was crowned "Kappa Alpha Rose" of the Theta chapter of KA. Graduated in 1956 & married in 1956. Began teaching elementary school in Lexington, continuing to teach in Pensacola; taking two years off to have her two children Jay DeWitt and Stacy Leigh. After teaching 34 years she has retired to the Osceola Golf Course.
