Can you imagine leaving everything familiar, all your family, taking few possessions and being brave enough to face the unknown each and every day? They were a hardy stock and they did more than endure; they prevailed. They did the best they could with what they had and the irony is that they lacked all we have and they had all we lack.

    This is the Camp business in Chattanooga. Standing next to the doorway (on the left) is Grant T. Camp. In the wagon on the left is oldest son, Cleve and on the right is Arthur Camp.
  • William Thomas Camp (1823-1884) (70 KB)
    My gggrandfather, arrived in Chattanooga, TN on May 18, 1864 on the "General". In a train of four cars were more than 100 refugees from Rome, GA. A pitched battle between Federal and Confederate troops caused the inhabitants of that GA area to seek safety in Chattanooga.
  • Civil War Ancestor: SAMUEL FRANCIS EVANS (73 KB)
    Sam Evans (1833-1900) served in Co. I, 53rd TN Infantry. He was severely wounded in thighs July 28, 1864 at Atlanta. He never recovered from this wound.
