Evansville, Arkansas May 1, 1973 U.S. Postal Week. The first post office established in Washington County was named Vineyard. It was in the extreme southwest corner of the county, near the Indian line. Lewis Evans was named postmaster on February 21, 1829. Evans was the first Sheriff of Washington County (October 1828). The town of Evansville is named for him. His bond as postmaster was $300 and his sureties were Jonathan Allen and Jacob Chandler. In Pioneer days, the postal business conducted in the home of the postmaster. It is not known where Lewis Evans lived. The name (from "The Lord's Vineyard") was given to the settlement by John Latta, who settled on Evansville Creek shortly after the organization of Washington County. John Latta succeeded Evans as postmaster in 1835. For three years, from 1835 to 1838, Vineyard Post Office was located in the 2-story log home of the Lattas---the identical building that is now (March 1958) being moved in Prairie Grove and restored in Battlefield Park.
