One of our more distinguished family members, General Poe was an 1856 graduate of West Point, Civil War veteran, and engineer. He graduated 6th in his class at West Point. During the war he served in the infantry and as an engineer. Most of his career was an engineer. A large part of his work was in the Midwest. The Poe Locks at Sault Saint Marie are named after him. This is where he fell while inspecting them and sustained an injury that led to his death. Three of his four children died before him. This photo appears to have been taken while he was a Colonel.
