Notes for M
ARY NANCY STEENBERGEN:
Evidently, Mary Nancy Steenbergen preferred using her middle name of Nancy, because she signed many legal documents that way. Even her tombstone lists her name as Nancy. Her obituary, however, gave her name as Mary, and the census taker recorded it as such in 1850.

Nancy's obituary from the October 22, 1896 edition of the "Gallipolis Weekly Journal" contains the following information:

"Mrs. Mary McNealey died suddenly at the residence of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. John Pepple, last evening, October 21st, 1896, at about 7 o'clock while sitting in her chair. She would have been 96 years old next Christmas day. She had been complaining more than usual, and that morning had a slight fainting spell, but she ate supper and was sitting in her accustomed arm chair, while her daughter, Mrs. Pepple, was reading to her, as was her custom when at leisure. She did not exactly understand something that Mrs. Pepple said, and had asked about it, when her head dropped back on her chair and she passed away with all of her faculties perfect to the last moment of her life.

Her biography is a history of this city, almost from the first, and wrote it as she gave it to us from her own lips, a year or so ago, but we found it impossible to lay our hands on it today and may produce it later.

Suffice it to say that she was a very healthy, robust woman, with a remarkable memory, and a more than usual amount of good hard sense. She told with relish every one born and raised here, remembered every important incident, connected with the town, took interest in everything as though she were only sixty years old, was a kindly sympathetic old lady that every one enjoyed conversing with.

She left four daughters and any number of grandchildren. Her daughters are Mrs. Pepple; Mrs. Samuel Kerr; Mrs. Dr. J. A. VanVleck; and Mrs. Eliza Harmon, all of this city.

Her maiden name was Mary Steenbergen. She was the widow of the late George McNealey, a kindly old gentleman who was highly respected.

Her funeral services will be conducted from the home of Mrs. Pepple, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, by Rev. A. J. Hawk, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, her interment following at Pine Cemetery by Hayward & Son."

Burial: October 23, 1896, Pine Street Cemetery in Gallipolis, Ohio.
Cause of Death: Heart failure.
Medical Information: Died at 7:00 p.m. while sitting in a chair at her daughter and son-and-law's (Jane & John Pepple) home.
Fact: April 11, 1819, Maiden name appears as Stomberger in her marriage record, but as Steenbergen in every other official record.
Will: November 10, 1896, Her property was divided among her five surviving children: Mary VanVleck, Lucy Kerr, Jane Pepple, Eliza Harmon, and Margaret Dunning. Son-in-law Samuel Kerr was appointed executor. H.P. Hanna was the Probate Judge.
