5. MARY CHARLOTTE2 MCNEALEY (GEORGE1) was born February 02, 1828 in Gallia County, Ohio, and died January 28, 1914 in Gallipolis, Gaillia County, Ohio. She married JAY ADDISON VANVLECK July 09, 1849 in Gallia County, Ohio. He was born August 04, 1829 in New York, and died August 10, 1912 in Gallia County, Ohio.

Notes for M
ARY CHARLOTTE MCNEALEY:
Mary's obituary was printed in the January 30, 1914 edition of the "Gallipolis Weekly Journal." It reads as follows:

                  "Aged Lady Dies
Widow of Late Dr. J. A. VanVleck
                        Passes Over Great Divide

Mrs. Mary Charlotte VanVleck, widow of the late Dr. Jay A. VanVleck, died at her house on First Avenue between Spruce and Cedar at five minutes before 12 o'clock on the night of Jan. 28, 1914, from three strokes of paralysis, the first on Dec. 5, 1912, and Jan. 3, 1913, and the last one Saturday morning before her death. She had been perfectly helpless since the first stroke and had a nurse constantly every since. They would lift her up to let her sit awhile and then lift her to the bed again.

She would have been 86 years old next Monday morning, February 2nd.

She was united in marriage with Dr. VanVleck nearly 70 years ago, and has lived where she died for the last 60 years.

She and the Doctor became the parents of 11 children, two dying in infancy--America, Emma, Ellsworth and Alice living to an adult age before death.

Those surviving her are Mrs. J. A. Reynolds of Addison; Samuel E. VanVleck of this city; Dr. John VanVleck of Los Angeles, California; and Dr. Eugene VanVleck of Huntington, West Virginia.

Her grandfather built the first Methodist church in Gallipolis. They were all great Methodists and he a class leader and all were brought up in that church.

Mrs. VanVleck was an invalid a good portion of her life and years ago kept her bed for 12 years.

Her living sisters are in delicate health and could not be with her as they would have liked in her illness.

She was a woman for the home, seldom leaving it and greatly attached to husband and family. Since the death of Dr. VanVleck, she has leaned upon her son, Samuel, who has been very devoted and attentive to her, so much so she would scarcely permit him out of her sight. The other children all left home years ago.

Mrs. VanVleck was a sweet dispositioned old lady and every one who knew her was fond of her, and she goes to her tomb her casket covered with roses, and with the tearful regrets of a host of friends.

The funeral was this afternoon at her late home conducted by Rev. E. M. Evans of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church with the interment on the family plot in Pine Street Cemetery conducted by Hayward."

The July 22, 1869 edition of the "Gallipolis Journal" reported that John A. VanVleck, age 13, killed William Lanvin on July 14, 1869 with a one-bladed Barlow knife. John and Mr. Lanvin's son, James, were engaged in a fight beside the Ohio River at the foot of Dufour's Wharf. William Lanvin's wife--Ann McHale Lanvin--intervened in the altercation and parted John VanVleck and her son, James Lanvin. William Lanvin went on to the wharf to assist his wife and son, and "John VanVleck came up whittling." A scuffle ensued between William Lanvin and John VanVleck, and William grabbed the knife from John. Sometime during the scuffle, William was fatally wounded by the knife. John VanVleck was "bound over at $1000." (All words in quotes were taken verbatim from the newspaper article.)

William Lanvin was born in County Mayo, Ireland on May 12, 1812; and his wife, Ann McHale, was born in County Mayo, Ireland and her date of birth was January 15, 1824. Ann died January 16, 1892. They are buried beside each other at the Pine Street Cemetery in Gallipolis, Ohio.
