Mrs. Kerr has been in poor health for the past year and while suffering constantly, she bore it uncomplainingly. Though her death has been expected daily, for perhaps a week, yet it came as a terrible shock at last.

All that was possible was done to stay the Death Angel, but he hovered near and just as the first beams of day were breaking, he gathered from our midst this one, beloved by all and whose place can never be filled."

Notes for S
AMUEL KERR:
Samuel Kerr was a community leader and activist. During the cholera epidemic of 1852-1854, he remained in Gallia County to help take care of the sick and dying, although many citizens fled the area. He married each of the nurses he worked with to protect their reputations, because they tended patients together during the night and it engendered gossip and speculation.

He had three other wives prior to Lucy McNealey. The first was May Gardner whom he married October 1, 1845. They had three children in quick succession, and then Mary died of cholera on April 28, 1852 at the age of 25. His second wife's first name was Mary too--Mary E. Hayward. Samuel and Miss Hayward married February 8, 1853, and she died of cholera within two months on April 28, 1853. Samuel's third bride was Charlotte Almira Hayward, a sister to Mary E. Hayward. Their wedding took place October 1, 1853, and she became pregnant immediately. Charlotte met the same fate as her two predecessors: she succumbed to cholera November 28, 1853. Her tombstone states that she was buried with her infant.

Samuel Kerr had several professions. He was a marble cutter and farmer, as well as a Gallia County, Ohio magistrate for 30 years. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army as a veterinary surgeon.
