September 28, 1999 On Sept. 28, 1899 Myrtle Josephine Kinney was born in Piskehagen, N.B. It was the end of a millennium and here we are 100 years later running around like Chicken Little telling everybody that the sky is going to fall on New Year's Eve. I'm sure there was not as much fanfare about it then as there is now. Just to bring this whole thing into perspective, and to illustrate to the younguns here today (everybody except Gram) how long ago this event was, I thought I would touch on some events going on at the time. Our Prime Minister at the time was Sir Wilfrid Laurier. He's the dude on the $5 bill, in case you thought he was the inventor of the Thermos or something. It was also a time when the cry of the Great White North was "thar's gold in them thar hills!" as hundreds of men and women headed to the Klondike, hoping to cash in on a gold strike. It was to be 4 more years before Henry Ford founded Ford Motor Co. and it was also 4 years later that the Wright Brothers made history with their first flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. I guess what I'm saying here is that it was not a good time to catch a cab to the airport. Fred Astaire and Alfred Hitchcock were also born the same year. Myrt and her family moved to a place between Lorraine Speight's and Peter Thorne's, now commonly known as "The Kinney Place". She attended the Lee Settlement school that was located on the road that now goes to Hugh Parks' residence. The family moved to Tower Hill from the Kinney Place early in the 20th century. Bonny River was calling and so was a guy named George. She married a railway man named George Matheson on April 18, 1921 and had 3 daughters and 4 sons, who in turn had 18 children in total. I'm sorry, this is where I quit as it starts to get out of hand and I run out of fingers & toes. I'm sure there's someone here who knows all of these details, as I'm sure I would miss someone. The Mathesons were raising these kids after the world had been at war and was preparing for another, while the Great Depression was bearing down on Myrt and her family. Times were tough, but George and Myrt managed to put enough food on the table and clothes on the backs of the younguns. For years, Myrt and George ran an outfitting business in the McDougall Lake area, Moe's Young Clearing to be exact. I can remember as a kid traipsing to the camp and having a sense of awe just to be in the presence of these men who travelled from all over the States just to hunt at my grandparent's camp. Perkins, McGregor, Chicowski, and Litekins are just a few names I remember. This was a big business and everything was on hold until after hunting season was over. I have always been puzzled by the number of people who called her "Aunt Myrt". I thought "Are these people really her nephews or nieces or are they just trying to be cool and fit in?" I mean, this is just about everybody in Bonny River and Second Falls. Well, I got to thinking and put it all together. She had 6 brothers and 6 sisters. If you take all of these people and start going down the tree, there are not too many people in this area left out. If you have lived here for 20 years or more, there's a really good chance that there is Kinney blood running through your veins or you are related to someone who has married into the Kinney clan. I guess this answers my question. No, we are not all interbred up here, we just have fertile ancestors. Anyway, as you can see, Gram is alive and kicking and we are all grateful for that. I know there is a great sense of rejoice here today, but also a great deal of envy. There are people here who are half or quarter of her age and are not as sharp as her. She has slowed a bit in the later years, but who hasn't? We can all only hope to reach her age and have our wits about us. One thing I wanted to tell is that this week's Courier will have (other than the Bonny River News) a special story of Gram's life and her picture as well.
