1. REV. WILLIAM RILEY⁶ TWILLEY (JAMES⁵, WILLIAM⁴, GEORGE³, ROBERT², ROBERT¹) was born December 1823 in Jasper Co., Ga., and died 1911 in Cherokee Co. GA. He married (1) PRICILLA TERRY September 25, 1851 in Dekalb Co., Ga., daughter of WILLIAM TERRY and SARAH. She was born 1824 in DeKalb Co. GA., and died 1871 in Paulding Co., Ga.. He married (2) MARY JANE TERRY October 24, 1875, daughter of WILLIAM TERRY and SARAH. She was born 1827 in DeKalb Co., Ga..

Pricilla Terry was Rev. William Twilley's 1st. wife. All his children were born from this marriage. Mary Jane Langford was his 2nd. wife and Pricilla's sister.
Rosanna was severely burned and Pricilla was having a difficult time. Some soldiers came by and Pricilla stopped them and showed the officer the condition of Rosanna. According to the story, the officer remarked, "surely this man is needed at home". He went on his way and W.R. was home a few days later.
W.R. stayed at home until the Confederate Army sent for him. He was cutting wood on a hillside below the house when they came for him. They didn't even give him time to change clothes. Evidently, Sherman and the Yankees were coming South about then.
The Yankees made their run at Dallas by way of New Hope Church on the Burnt Hickory Ridge Rd. that was right through the Twilley settlement.
W.R. Twilley is recorded as being the moderator, or chairman, of the meeting when the New Hope Baptist Ass. of Churches was formed in 1885.
There is also a Mt. Moriah Church on Lookout Mt. Ala. that the Twilleys in that area attended
Rev. William Riley Twilley was a Confederate Civil War Veteran. He enlisted 1/11/1863 at Camp Phillips and was released on oath 2/5/1864 at Camp Phillips, Ga. He had been a Sergeant in Company F, 9th Battalion Georgia Cavalry, Confederate State Guards.

He was a traveling Minister and established several churches. One of them was and is the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church established in 1842. The Yankees tore down the church to build a bridge across a creek for Shermans Army to get their equipment across.

The church was rebuilt of brick and the Paulding County Twilleys have their annuel reunion there in Sept.

There are gravestone markers in the cemetery for the parents of Wm R. Twilley.

WM. R. Died on Alonzo Lorenzo Dells place in Ala. Would be
DeKalb Co., Ala. He was carried by wagon from the LOOKOUT MT.to FT. Payne and

Notes for PRICILLA TERRY:
Pricilla was the community mid-wife and doctor. She ministered herb medicines to the sick throughout that area. She gave birth to two sons, John Wesley & "Shug", after the War Between the States.
In 1871, Pricilla being 47 years old, living through a war and reconstruction era, life became more than she could bear. Pricilla weaved a rope of cotton from her own fields and hung herself from a willow tree at the W.R. Twilley spring place.

Notes for ROSANNA TWILLEY:
She suffered a concussion from a fall and had fainting spells. When one of these spells came on her, she fell into a fire. W.R. was away with the State Guard at the time. Rosanna was severely burned and Pricilla was having a difficult time. Some soldiers came by and Pricilla stopped them and showed the officer the condition of Rosanna. According to the story, the officer remarked, "surely this man is needed at home". He went on his way and W.R. was home a few days later.
While the Yankees were in that area , they looted it very heavily. When one of these raids came to the W.R. Twilley farmstead, they were taking away the family milk cow. Rosanna was still in a very bad way & the only food she could get down was milk. Pricilla ran out & caught the Yankee soldiers. She told them that Rosanna would starve to death if they took the cow. They shot & killed the cow right in the front yard, cut open it's belly, removed the liver and left it laying there. Rosanna died.
While her father the Rev. was in the war, Rose age 11 was badly burned when her dress caught fire. She was unable to eat anything except milk. She starved to death during the War as a result of Yankees killing the family cow.
