After marrying, he purchased a country store in the Burnt Hickory community. Amos also drove the school bus. He owned his own bus, because at that time, the county did not own buses. After selling the store, Amos continued to work at the sawmill business and drive the bus. He later worked with his brother, Jack, at Powell and Kirby Concrete in Paulding County.
Amos was a founding member of the Paulding Memorial Hospital Authority and served on the Board of Directors for fourteen years. He was also an active member of Narroway Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons. His church was a very important part of his life and he devoted much time and care to his church. Amos was affectionately called "Pa-J" by many of the children in the community. He would often take a bus load of children skating on Thursday nights. He was truly an honest and humble man.

DELL COCHRAN:
Odell opened Powell Fashion Shop, a woman's clothing store, in 1955. The store was located on the square in Dallas, Georgia. The retail business was certainly her calling. She loved selling and being with her customers. Not only was she a proprietor, she was a friend, confidant, and advisor to many. She especially loved children and teen-agers and had the ability to win their love and friendship and become their "other mother". She was called "Ma-toe" by many. You could always count on her to come through with a joke or alaugh just when you needed it most. She was a great person who loved life and had fun at everything.
