Ancestors of Carl Frederick Falkenberg

Generation No. 3

      4. Baron Gerhard Knut Alfrid Falkenberg, born May 29, 1819 in Qwarngarden in Traslofs, Sweden; died February 28, 1873 in Quebec, Canada. He was the son of 8. Baron Ulric Falkenberg and 9. Johanna Susanna Liedberg. He married 5. Elizabeth Kimball July 17, 1842 in New York.

      5. Elizabeth Kimball, born July 31, 1814 in New York State, U.S.A.; died June 29, 1877 in Bridge Collapsed. She was the daughter of 10. Timothi Kimball and 11. Mary Howard.

Notes for Baron Gerhard Knut Alfrid Falkenberg:
From the Notes of Carl Frederick Falkenberg:

I can recount a family legend about my grandfather which is one of the few scraps of information that I have. In Sweden, where he was a person of some importance, he was placed in charge of a political prisoner at a time of great unrest in Sweden. Evidently his sympathies were with the prisoner since my grandfather allowed him to escape. Grandfather's friends then came to him and said that he had better get out of the country because the party in power was going to arrest him. So, it seems he fled the country with little more than the clothes he had on his back and ended up in New York in 1841.

For some time he made a precarious living doing all sorts of things until he was advised that the party in power had changed hands and his friends were forming a new government and he was invited to come back. So this he did, and possibly as a reward for his privations he was named Consul General to British North America with his residences and offices in the city of Quebec which was then the capital of Canada.

The post of Consul General was established in Quebec because at that time Quebec was exporting large quantities of pine timber and lumber to Britain and other countries where it was in great demand for ship building and other trades. A great deal of this lumber was carried by Scandinavian vessels and my grandfather's job was to look after their interests which he apparently did to the satisfaction of everybody as I have never heard anything to the contrary. Well our family stayed in Quebec for four generations and in fact my sister Hedda still lives there.

After Elizabeth Kimball died in a tragic accident, my Grandfather never married again and his family grew up in the city of Quebec where he occupied the position of Consul General to British North America from Sweden and Norway.

From an Appendix to the Immigration Report of 1868:

From a letter dated Quebec, 10 June, 1868 from L. Stafford to The Baron Falkenberg, Norwegian consulate, Quebec: "It is my duty to inform you that a party of Norwegian emigrants, numbering 85 souls, equal to 64 adults, at present on board the ship Caroline, from Christiania, (now lying in the stream,) and destined to the Western States, have been represented to me as having neither the means to pay their fares to the West, nor to provide for their daily support. I have already, I believe, informed you that the system hitherto existing of affording temporary relief and land passage to destitute emigrants is abolished by the curtailment of the grant for immigration purposes, and I shall, therefore, I regret to say, be unable to render these poor people any assistance. The Captain of the Caroline expresses his intention to land them in city this afternoon, ans as our sheds are already fully occupied and we have no room for their accommodation, I trust that your official position may enable you to adopt some means of affording them protection and relief. I shall also feel obliged by your communicating the substance of this letter to your Government, and I hope you will explain to them the hardships to which all emigrants must necessarily be exposed, who land here without sufficient funds to carry them through to their destinations." The reply was: "I am duly in receipt of your esteemed favor of the 10th inst., and note contents. With reference to the poor emigrants lately arrived per Norwegian ship Caroline, I beg to inform you that on the arrival here of Norwegian emigrants, who have no complaint to make respecting breach of contract, which, in the present instance is not the case, my function ceases, and I can officially take no notice of them. I must, of course, advise the Master of the Caroline to land his passengers whenever he thinks proper, within the limits of the law, and if through over-crowding or otherwise, malignant fevers should break out, the responsibility does certainly not fall on my shoulders. I consider the present case, as well as the subsequent ones, which, no doubt, unfortunately will occur as great hardships, particularly as your communication of the 4th May last, conveying the Canadian Government's intention not to assist indigent emigrants for the future has barely had time to reach Norway, and be made publicly known there."

Notes for Elizabeth Kimball:
From the notes of Carl Frederick Falkenberg:

My grandfather married an American lady named Kimball. She was a forbidding old dame -- I had a picture of her. I know little about her but she presented my grandfather with two sons and three daughters.

Grandmother Falkenberg died under tragic circumstances. She and my grandfather had been invited to attend the opening ceremonies of a new bridge which had been built across the Montmorency river right on the brink of the falls. As was usual in the case of the opening of a new bridge, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony and I think my grandfather must have been in attendance while my grandmother would be seated in one of the carriages which was across the river. Well, the ribbon was cut and the carriages proceeded across the bridge. When they got to the middle of the bridge the whole thing collapsed and these people, horses, carriages and all were swept over these falls which were over 300 feet high and nearly twice the height of Niagra. How my grandfather escaped the fate which she suffered is perhaps by a bit of luck.

He and a man named Gillespie from Quebec founded a company dealing in marine stores (all sorts of things dealing with sailing ships). They also engaged in shipbuilding small wooden vessels for use in the river trade and they brought a property on the Island of Orleans in a littly covey where they had a small mill and a shipbuilding yard.

Gravel, Thomson & Gravel            January 1957

On behalf of Miss Dagmar E. Falkenberg, of this city, we beg to inform you that the property known as St. Patrick's Hole, on the Island of Orleans, registered in the name of the Falkenberg heirs, was sold recently for the sum of $10,000, paid cash.

The Falkenberg heirs who are grandchildren by their mother, of the late James Dean of Quebec, who died on the 3rd of November, 1870, desire that all his living descendants should benefit by that sale and that the net proceeds be partitioned between them according to the ordinary rules of Estates' devolution.

      Helen D. Falkenberg Brown, for 1/4 of 1/4 = 1/16
      Hedda I. F. Falkenberg for 1/4 of 1/4 = 1/16.
