Our Steinmetz and Lang ancestors came from Schirrhoffen and Schirrhein, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. St. Nicolas Catholic Church served both of these adjacent villages and is located in Schirrhein. This photo shows the "new" church, constructed after the old church was destroyed during the liberation of France during World War II in 1945. This community, as well as adjoining Schirrhoffen, is totally Catholic, although Schirrhoffen had a large and vibrant Jewish community until about 1900. By the time of World War I, most Jews had moved away. If you want more info on this interesting Jewish community, check out Bernie SCHWARTZ's great, fascinating site at bernie06@sprynet.com. Bernie has some great material.
