Charles and Lorena cannot be found in Alabama censusrecords for 1920 nor 1930 - his grave wasnever found it should have a nice headstone furnished by the VA howeverthere are now many woods growing around the Church wheremany others might have been buried. Weknow that his daughter and her husband and child are buried by or nearher father, because this author visited those gravesmany many years ago, but those graves are not found either; then what if the parents of Charles are buried herealso
JAMES was in Alabama 1860 after the death of his wife soJosiah must have joined him, or helped himmove, and then enlisted in the Civil War...

Descendants of James W. McClain
Generation No. 1
1. JAMES W.4 MCCLAIN (JOSIAH3, CHARLES2, PAPA1) wasborn Abt. 1814 in South Carolina, and diedAft. 1860 in Possibly Coffee County, Al. (near Geneva). He married (1)ANNA L Abt. 1838 in South Carolina orGeorgia. She was born 1822, and died Aft. 1850 in DeKalb County, Georgia. Hemarried (2) MALINDA Abt.1856.
Notes for JAMES W. MCCLAIN:
There were two James W. McClains in DeKalb County before1850. Some researchers think that the oneborn in 1811 is the son of Josiah and Nancy. Your Compiler thinks that J. W.McClain, b. 1814 is their son. Reason #1being that the James W. b. 1814 named his first child Josiah(after his father)Reason #2 being that the James W. born in 1811 did not movefrom Dekalb County but died there in 1889. The James W.McClane, b, 1811 is thought to be the son of John McClain, abrother of Josiah McClain's. This would mean that the two James W.McClains were firstcousins.
Both of the James W. McClains that were in DeKalb County,Ga. in 1832 drew in the Gold Lottery andLand Lottery. They had lucky draws. One drew (Gold Lottery) land in Section12, Dist. 1, Lot #0068. One drew in the Land Lottery Section4, Dist 7, Lot 241. Both of these Lots are located in whatis now Cobb County, Ga. (was originally at drawing time in 1832known as Cherokee District).
James W. McClain, born 1814 must have lost his first wifeand married again. He is found on the 1860 Coffe County,Alabama census (P.O.Geneva) as follows: (same children aslisted on 1850 census of Dekalb County). The oldest child Josiah M.McClain has left his father's home andmarried.
McLain, James, age 46, b. S.C. farmer, value of realestate 100, person 200
" Malinda, age 26, (does not state wife), b.N.C.
" Benjamin L. age 18, farm laborer, b.Ga.
" Sarah E., age 16, b. Ga.
" Martha J., age 15, b. Ga.
" James P., age 14, b. Ga.
" Nancy C., age 12, b. Ga.
" Thomas A., age 3, b. Ga.
" Frances, age 2, b. Ga.
" Thomas F., 2 months
Since there is a 2 month old in this household and a skipin the children's ages (from 12 to age 3), it points toMalinda being James's wife. Why they named two children Thomas isnot known - Thomas A and Thomas F ?. On thetwo censuses James W. McClain is shown as having fathered ten children.More work needs to be done on thisfamily.

Notes for JOSIAH MARION MCCLAIN:
Josiah M. McClain deserted Julia Ann America King withfour small children. He is believed to have fought in the theCivil War and moved to Alabama where he married again. JuliaAnn filed for a divorce in Carroll County,Ga. on grounds that he was missing and believed to have deserted her and thechildren. In 1870 Julia Ann and fourchildren were living near Bowden, Georgia. On June 17, 1880 she lived in the 9thDistrict, 1006 of GMD of Carroll County, hadtwo children in her household with one living a short distance away. Thefollowing census seems to be the same JosiahM. who left his first family in Georgia.

JULIA filed an application with the Cherokee Nation butrejected.

It is the opinion of this compiler the Josiah M. McLainwho enlisted in the Civil War in Co. K, 33 Alabama Infantry inGreenville (Butler County) in 1862 is thisJosiah. Records show that his father James W. McClain was in CoffeeCounty, Ala. in 1860 and that he moved there from DeKalb Co., Ga. afterhe lost his first wife. In 1860 James' parents wereliving in Cobb County, Ga. Josiah could have gone Ala. to visit hisfather and enlisted; however, he returned home for a visit longenough to father his last child with Juliann America King who in1872 filed for a divorce in Carroll County stating she did notknow where he was living. Evidently, he deserted his family. Norecord can be found of themarriage.
No record has been found of his second marriage toElizabeth Broadway. . They are found on the 1880 Montgomery,Ala. E.D. 142 Tuckers Store

Ida O. McClain, dau. age 9 mo. b. Ala.
This census would indicate that Josiah married about 1869in Alabama. He evidently married again before Julia Anndivorced him. The question is - was he abigamist or did he get a divorce over in Ala? Elisabeth had her first childwhen age 16. Perhaps this was a common lawmarriage.
Elizabeth married again abt. 1899 in Al. Was she widowedor did Josiah run off again?
The 1910 census, Mongomery County (Tuckers Twp., Beat 15),page 192, household #68shows:

Notes for JULIA ANN AMERICA KING:
Julia Ann America King McClain filed for a divorce afterJ. M. McClain deserted her and his fourchildren.
No marriage license for this couple can be found. It isbelieved that they married in Cobb County,Ga. and that the records were destroyed when Sherman set fire to theCourthouse. The following record was foundin Carroll County, Ga. which proves there was a marriage between thetwo.

Your compiler remembers her great grandfather McClain. She was nine years old when he died. He bought a smallfarm (about 100 acres with a house on it) in the RidgegroveCommunity in Lee County, AL. near hisdaughter Laura, her grandmother. He sold this house and land to his daughterLaura Clements in 1934. He and his daughterlived about 1/3 mile apart when he bought the farm. She and her husbandwere renting their land from the Sanfordfamily of Opelika. The cause of death of his wives varied. His first wifedied of typhoid fever leaving four little children, the oldest wasLaura, about six years of age. James Benjamin (called Jim)was about 6' tall, brown eyes, (brown curly hair before itturned gray), olive complexion), large bone structure but thin.He was probably quite handsome in his youth. His daughterLaura, my grandmother, looked a lot likehim, with olive complexion, dark wavy hair, and brown eyes (she was about5'7" tall) with nice facialfeatures.
