Notes for Nettie Ethel Temple:
The following information was furnished by Marion E. (White) Lamson. daughter of Nettie Ethel Temple
My mother, Nettle Ethel Temple, was born August 23, 1876 in Warden, Shefford County, Quebec, Canada, about five miles from Waterloo and forty miles from Montreal. She was of seven children, four girls and three boys.Edith Armina, Clara Arnanda, Nettie Ethel,EdnaElvira, Albert Sylvester,Homer Edwin, and Gordon Leslie, born to Edwin Ebenezer Temple and Ella Jane Martin, both English.
She gave me the following information when she was in her 80's.Her childhood was a happy one with chores to do but there were no luxuries like running water and the like. Her first school was two miles away and the children went thru the pastures carrying their dinner in a pail. The family moved frequently, living on rented farms, and she did not get much schooling - something she always regretted. Her penmanship was excellent tho and with all the letters she wrote to me there were seldom misspelled words or incorrect English. Sunday was a quiet day in the Temple household. Everyone went to Sunday School
and Grandfather Temple did no extra work.Christmas was a happy at the church -decorating the tree, stringing popcorn and making other things for decoration. There never seemed to be any money to buy gifts but there was always something on the Church tree for everyone. In those days there were quilting parties, sliding and sleigh-riding parties, husking bees and group activities, all good fun.She said winters were hard and cold and Grandfather would hitch up the horses to abig pung sled with buffalo robes and bells on the horses and sled and they would all go to a Church Supper.
Grandmother Temple was a wonderful woman, very hardworking in the home and outside with never any conveniences. In 1901 Grand father Temple finally bought a big farm on Brown's Hill, Quebec, Canada and the youngest son Gordon and his wife lived with them.Grandmother died on Dec. 26, 1914.My Grandfathermarried again on Jan. 14, 1920 and moved down to Ayer's Cliff, Canada, where he had built a home, and Uncle Gordonand Aunt Pearl remained on the farm. His new wife, Elmora Whitney was a fine woman, quite a bit youngerbut they were very happy. He died on Jan. 29,1944 and she died in 1963.
In Sept. 1897 Mother came down into the U.S. to St.. Paul's School to work.It was the first time she had worked away from home. Her sister Edith and a girlfriend were already working there. Many Canadian and Irish girls were employed at the school in various capacities and it was here that she met my father.During the summer school vacation when the boys were gone, all the girls went to York Beach, Maine and worked in the big hotels there as waitresses and chambermaids.
Mother and Father were married on July 11, 1899 in Warden, Quebec, Canada in the church and went to live in the house inConcord, N. H. that Father had built. She was a wonderful cook and could whip a meal together for four or ten without getting the least bit flustered. She always had lots of plants and a flower garden and had a real "green thumb".She said when she married that she wasn't going to work in the fields as well as do all the work in the house like her mother had and she never did except on rare occasions in an emergency, but all the hired men were well fed.She was a Charter Member of the Millville Women's Club and served more than 50 years in club and church work.
