IPSON ERASMUS TILLEY:
Below was told by Joy Tilley about his grandfather.
I can not find where history bears this out but our first known Tilley, Gipson Erasmus, said that John Tilley of England, who came over on the Mayflower was his progenitor.
Gipson Erasmus Tilley gave his children a verbal account of his ancestors. His youngest son remembers it as, Gipson Erasmus Tilley saying: My father was John Tilley, my Grandfather was named John Tilley, my Great Grandfather was named John Tilley, my Great Great Grandfather was named John Tilley. Gipson Erasmus Tilley said that his father was John Tilley and all the others back were named John, back to John Tilley of England, who came over on the Mayflower.

Not much is known about Gipson Erasmus Tilley’s family.
He did have a brother. named Abb., who had a son named William. I found where A.J. Tilley married Sarah E. Nichols on Dec. 9, 1857 in Kerr Co., Texas. (Now I wonder if this was Uncle Abb. Maybe some day you can do more research on the Tilley’s.)
Andrew Tilley was on the Grand Jury panel in Kerr Co., Texas in 1857. This could have been a son of the brother of John Tilley, who was born in 1800 in Georgia, for he did have a son, A.W. Tilley born 1837 in Alabama. They were in Dewitt Co., Texas in 1860.
There was also a brother, Elijah Tilley (Uncle Lige), married Nancy Deason Dec. 5, 1858 Medina Co., Texas. They had a daughter born 1866 in Texas. They also had a son named John, who married Allie J. Sharp Dec. 12, 1900 in Williamson Co., Texas. I also read a story of Lige Tilley in Williamson Co., Texas, so they moved on.
Elijah Tilley was born 1829 in Georgia. He enlisted in Ranger Co. G in Medina Co., Texas in 1862. He was in the Frontier Regiment for Bandera Co., Blanco Co., Medina Co., and Uvalde Co. He was discharged at Camp Verde, June 30, 1863. He served 4 months and 12 days at $12.00 a month. Total pay was $52.80. These men had to furnish their own horse and equipment.
These Tilley brothers and their parents were all born in Georgia according to the census record.
The story has been handed down, that all the Tilley’s and families left Georgia in several wagons - like a wagon train. Some were lagging way behind the others and when they came to a crossroads - the ones that could read went to Texas and the ones that could not read took the other road and no one knows where they went. Most people that far back did not go to school much, if any. But I expect this is just a tale told as to how the family became separated.

Great Uncle Neal Tilley helped me on some of this and he wrote that the Tilley ancestor prayer was:
"God bless us and bind us, kick up the dust behind us, so even the Rangers can’t find us."
It looks like that might have been right, for we did not have much luck going further back on the Tilley Family. There are many Tilley’s in Warren Co., Georgia but I could not tie them in our family of Tilley’s.

Gipson Erasmus (Gip or G.E.) Tilley was born approx. 1827 in Georgia and married - approx. 1850- to Mary Zelda Moore, born approx. 1832. Mary Zelda and two daughters died in 1878 from some kind of fever and all were buried on the same day in unmarked graves in Knockernut Cemetery, Caldwell Co., Texas. Gip Tilley also had this fever but recovered. It was said that they gave him great amounts of black pepper to sweat out the fever. Gipson Erasmus died on Oct. 20, 1905 and was buried on Sunday Oct. 22, in Evergreen Cemetery, Devine, Texas (Mason Records). His casket was bought and made by Brisco Lumber Co. in Devine. The first casket was made to short. His son, Sam became angry , when it was suggested that the body be crammed into it, and a second casket had to be made. The grandchildren put up a marker for him and just guessed at his age. The date they have on the marker is 1830-1905.
G.E. Tilley’s occupations was farmer, stock raiser, carpenter, and he also tanned hides.
Gipson Erasmus Tilley signed his name G.E. Tilley, but most of his friends called him “Gip”.
Civil war records enlisted him as G. Tilley - Pvt. Co. C:; Woods ‘ Reg’t. Texas Cavalry (this was in 1862 and for the duration of the war), Age 33, (this age is not correct). Most ages are not correct on war records as most lied to get into the service, some were to young, others were to old to see action, so they lied so they would not be left as guard for home protection.
The Confederate pension record - G.E. Tilley, pension #2920, Post Office address Device, Texas - Median Co., Tex. - approved Aug. 1899. A sworn affidavit (July 1899) signed by G.E. Tilley, states that he is 72 years old and has been a resident of Medina Co. Texas for 41 years, and that he served in C.S.A. 4 years, Co. C. 32nd Texas Cavalry. Every record on him shows his detached service as hospital nurse. He was last paid Aug. 31, 1865. Value of his horse was $70.00, Equipment $10.00. He was known as Gib or Gibb on most war records.
Gip and Zelda Tilley were living in Caldwell Co., Texas in 1852 and they came to Medina Co. in 1857, according to his son Bee Tilley’s ledger. They were also on the 1860 census of Medina Co., Texas, probably living near Old Gran Pappy Moore (Mary Zelda’s Dad) on the Hondo Creek.
As the story of A.J. Sowell tells -- In the early days of Medina County -- Wild animals were numerous and their roar and screams could be heard at night as the animals came out of the jungle of chaparral and prickly pear to quench their thirst in the Hondo Creek. The animals came out on the opposite side of the creek, from the house. Wildcats, panthers, tigers, and Mexican lions. They depredated constantly on the young stock. Gip Tilley conceived the idea of having a large steel trap made. With this purpose in view, Gip went to San Antonio and succeeded in getting a trap made, which weighted 75 pounds. The animals had a regular trail from the thicket to the waterhole -- so in the trail, Gip Tilley carefully set his trap but failed to drive a stout stake to fasten the chain of the trap to. A mountain lion got caught in the trap and ran away with his foot still in the trap. That was the last Tilley ever saw of his large steel trap.

G.E. Tilley was a charter member of the Hondo Valley Masonic Lodge #252 A.F. & A.M., which met on the North bank of the Hondo Creek, 3 miles East of Hondo and 2 miles South of New Fountain. The Masonic Cemetery still stands as does the old foundation of this lodge hall. Hondo Lodge #252 under dispensation June 24, 1860. Tiler -- G.E. Tilley -- 1860, Senior Deacon -- G.E. Tilley --1866, Senior Deacon -- G.E. Tilley -- 1867. No more records were found of G.E. Tilley from 1867 until July 2, 1888, when he affiliated with Devine Lodge #590 A.F. & A.M., where he served as Senior Stewart in 1888, Tiler -- 1889, and Chaplin - 1892. During G.E. Tilley’s absences from Hondo Valley Lodge, he was in Guadalupe Co., Texas, home of G.E. and Mary Zelda Tilley -- 1869.
