  Notes for JONATHAN NICHOLS:
Jonathan Nichols fought in the Revolution and was wounded in the Battle of Bennington. He served under Captain Moses Nichols of Thetford, Vermont. The following is a letter to Henrietta F. Nichols from her "Cousin Elizabeth," dated March 27, year unknown. Speaking of Jonathan Nichols, she said: "But quite an experience was his in 1825 when Lafayette made his journey through the country. At Westfield he stopped for dinner and Jonathan as a Revolutionary soldier was presented to him. After the French way he lightly kissed grandfather on both cheeks, saying that he loved every soldier of that war. Grandfather always wore his hair in a queue, tied with a ribbon, long silk stockings, buckled shoes and knee breeches, he thought long trousers were terrible. You can imagine how surprised this staid reserved old New Englander was to be kissed by another man. But he bore it bravely." Letter from Elizabeth Nichols Furman.
The following is a quote from the State Papers of New Hampshire, Vol. XV, page 103, Revolutionary Rolls: "Payroll of Capt. Elisha Whitcomb's Company Regiment of Volunteers Expedition against Canada. Timothy Bedel as Colonel 1777-1778. Jonathan Nichols, Andrew Nichols, Capt. Samuel Wright Company, Colonel Nichols Regiment, General Stark's Brigade marched from Winchester in New Hampshire and joined the Northern Continental Army at Bennington and Stillwater July 23, 1777." Among the privates were Andrew Nichols and Jonathan Nichols.
