1. Peter³ Condit (Peter², John¹ Cunditt) was born Bet. 1698 - 1699 in Newark, NJ, and died Jul 11, 1768 in Morristown, NJ. He married Phebe Dodd. She was born 1703, and died Jul 26, 1768 in Morristown, NJ.

Notes for Peter Condit:
Peter Condit was born at Newark, NJ in 1698 or 1699. Early in life, Peter became a resident of Morristown, NJ where he acquired property, and where some, if not all, of his children were born. At the formation of the First Presbyterian Church in Morristown, in 1741, he and his wife were among its first communicants, and continued to be steadfast supporters of the organization until their deaths. Some of the descendants of Peter filled honorable places in the early political history of the country, while others attained to positions of eminence in the professions.

His will, on file in Trenton, NJ, is dated February 1, 1767, and was proved August 25, 1768. It names his wife, Phebe, and his children, Joseph, Nathaniel, Ebenezer, Silas and Peter. The executors named were his wife, and sons Joseph and Silas. The witnesses were Benoni Hathaway, Jedediah Mills and Thaddeus Dodd. Very nearly all the members of this branch of the family left their ancestral homes in Morris County and settled in the West and South.

The descendents of Peter originally spelled their name "Condict," and it is so recorded in the Morristown records. By 1885, so many had adopted the generally accepted spelling that many records use the spelling "Condit" throughout. In this record, those who are known to have adhered to the former spelling are indicated.
