I have been trying to find answers concerning my Holland line for over 15 years now. I only recently discovered my Great Grandfather's actual name: SOLOMON GROVER HOLLAND. I located his marriage certificate which showed that he married my Great Grandmother, AMANDA SMITH in Shelby Co., TN on August 24, 1917. I have had such a hard time discovering any information on this "mysterious" man. I know that he and Amanda lived in Shelby Co., TN and that they raised a family. Their children were/are: Fentress b.1918, Vivian b.1920, Ethel b.1921, Jack b.1923, and my grandfather, Freddie b.1926. Solomon left his wife and children for unknown reasons before my grandfather was born in 1926. Unfortunately, Solomon & Amanda's children have either passed away or they claim they have no knowledge of their father. I have found very little real facts on this man. He is listed in the 1920 Shelby Co., TN Census as "Bill Holland" age 28 from TN. (I've been told that he went by "Bill".) Other than the marriage license, I've obtained some of his children's birth certificates. They all indicate that their father was an "S.G. Holland". My grandmother also indicated that he had an older brother that people called "Boss Holland" and that she thought he was born in MS. It's also been suggested that Solomon may have spent some time in California. If anyone has ANY information on this family, PLEASE contact me at chasenmom@allvantage.com. This family tree also includes my Smith, Kelley, & Chambers Families. I will be forever grateful to anyone who can help me with my search. I will gladly trade any additional information that I have gathered. Thank you! UPDATE since 2000: I have discovered two more sources that have shed much light on my S.G. Holland mystery. I found Solomon Grover Holland's application for Social Security. He filled this form out in 1936 and it states these facts: He was born on August 3, 1899 in Mt.Plesant,MS. He lived in Nashville and worked at Sterchi Bros. Stores (I'm assuming as a salesperson) during that time. His parents were Solomon Robertson Holland and Caroline Roberts (other sources have listed her as "Callie Roberts"). The book, Mississippi marriages from 1829 to 1900, show that "S.R. Holland" married "N.M.C. Roberts" on April 30, 1885. I also found Solomon listed in the Social Security Death Index. It told me that: he died in June of 1972 and he lived most of his later life in Riverside County, California. I've also run across other information which suggests that Solomon's father was from Spain. While I've definately made more progress with this family line than I'd ever dreamt of ... I'm always searching for that new piece of information. Please contact me if you feel like you know anything at all about this family! |
