The Fehlings family traces its origin to the ancient Germany, during the age of the Roman Empire. The surname means "of the family of the chief of the tribe of East Westfalians." The tribe selected its chief from this family. The Fehlings family name is extremely old; it originated in the 2nd century. King Rudolph I of Habsburg bestowed the family coat of arms upon Theodosius Fehlings (1248-1309) when the King knighted Theodosius at Durnkrut, Austria, on the field of the Battle of Marchfield, on August 26, 1278. The family motto is "Solo Nobilitat Virtus"--"Virtue is the only true nobility." Otto Karl Fehlings (1418-1472) fought in the last Crusade. Lambert Fehlings (1817-1902) brought the Fehlings family from Germany to United States in 1845-1846. The American branch of the Fehlings family has intermarried with other families, such as Ringer, Meredith, Jamison, Alten, White, Eyken, Kremer, and Koenig. The Meredith line by marriage can trace its lineage back to the Maryland Adventurers of 1634, Knights of the Garter, sureties of the Magna Charta, the Emperor Charlemagne, and other crowned heads of Europe. The Fehlings family has an unbroken line of male descent from 1184 to the present. Current members of the family are members of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Maryland Society of the Ark and the Dove, and the Somerset Chapter of Magna Charta Barons.
