Notes for C
HARLES LEWIS FELLOWS:
Charles suffered a broken leg in his early youth, while playing with his brother. Medical attention was not available and the fracture healed with a considerable shortening which resulted in a marked limp necessitated the use of a cane, which was always available for use on his grandsons when necessary. Charles came to the Wisconsin Territory, Racine with his parents in 1839. He ran away from home in 1848 and found a job as a cabin boy on the brig Allegheny. He received an education in the schools of Racine and graduated from Bell's Commercial College of Chicago in 1856. As a young man before he became of age, he sailed his father's vessels as captain on the Great Lakes. In the spring of 1854 he was the first to sail a vessel across the bar into Wolf River [Algoma]. During the "Panic" of 1857 Charles went broke and lost all his vessels and other property. Shortly after this he took up residence in the Wolf River area engaging in fishing operations at Stoney Creek 6 miles north of the settlement at Wolf River. The fishing camp was near an Indian camp located just north of the present "creek". During the winter months the family lived at Wolf River and after a few years of fishing operations Charlie, as he was generally known invested in a mercantile business in Ahnapee [name having been changed from Wolf River], and later on went in the same business at Stoney Creek. In 1871 Charlie entered the saw mill business at Stoney Creek, officially named by this time Foscoro, after the owners of the mill Foster Coe & Roe. The combined mill and store business prospered until another "panic" in 1873, again wiped out a gteat share of his property and investments. After the saw mill business began to decline due to the depletion of the forests in the area, Charlie carried on farming and other interests. He built and operated a telephone line north of the city of Algoma including the first toll line into Sturgeon Bay from Algoma. This combined farming and telephone business, with a side trip at odd times into local and state politics, continued until his death.
