Descendants of WILLIAM FELKINS

Generation No. 2

2. JOHN3 FELKINS, SR. (WILLIAM2, HENRY1) was born 1759 in Virginia2, and died January 21, 1839 in Overton, Co. Tennessee2. He married ? ABT 1779 in VA. She was born 1762.

Notes for J
OHN FELKINS, SR.:
JOHN FELKINS is the only FELKINS listed as a Revolutionary war veteran from Virginia, and the only FELKINS listed for this war. He enlisted in Captain Payton's Company, Colonels Marshall and Heth's Virginia Regiment in 1777 as a Pvt. and was wounded 9 times in the battle of Buford, served 3 years. In a letter to Mrs. William P. Felkins from the Veteran's Administration he is listed at age 71 in 1830 this would place his date of birth at 1759. He would have been 18 when he enlisted and 21 when he got out. Since his death did not occur until 1839 he would have been 80 yrs old at that time.

In the Virginia tax records 1782 to 1787 in Fauquier Co. the only FELKINS shown are JOHN and WILLIAM FELKINS. This is also the case for the 1787 Va. Census. So I have to assume that since there is only one JOHN FELKINS shown in both the Census and Tax records for Va., that this is the same JOHN FELKINS (from Va.) which moved to Overton Co. Tn. in later life, and requested his Revolutionary War Pension.

In 1787 JOHN FELKINS' Loudoun Co. Va. taxes were paid by WILLIAM ELLZEY. Their are many possible explanations for this but no records show any relationship, so the reason his taxes were paid for him are still unknown. He would have been about 28 yrs old at the time (Mr. ELLZEY was a wealthy lawyer), and Mr. ELLZEY's son was included in the list of 3 people he paid taxes for.

In an apparent wagon train type exodus he and his family moved across the mountains into what is now Kentucky, although in 1787 it was still part of Va. I believe this to be true since JOHN and WILLIAM lived in Loudoun and Fauquier Counties Va. (on the east coast) respectively as shown in the 1787 Va. Census. Whether this move went in stages or all at once in the years between 1787 and 1810 I do not yet know.
A JOEL DOSS resided in Bedford Co. Va. also in 1787. This is the same name shown on the Surety Bond in 1808 in Pulaski Co. Ky. for the wife (ESTER DOSS) of MARTIN FELKINS, JOHN Sr.'s son. Also a SHADRACK CUNDIFF married a SALLY FELKINS in Buford, Co. Va. and later a SHADRACK CUNDIFF signed a surety for BETHSHEBA CUNDIFF to marry JOHN FELKINS, Jr. in Pulaski Co. Kentucky.

Later a head of household JOHN FELKINS, Sr. is listed as paying taxes in Pulaski Co. Kentucky in 1808. Included in the household were JOHN FELKINS, Jr., MARTIN FELKINS and WILLIAM FELKINS (young). JOHN Jr. and MARTIN FELKINS were both married in 1808 in Pulaski Co. and Wm in 1813. JOHN Jr. is listed as being born in Virginia in later Census records as was his wife BETHSHEBA CUNDIFF whom he married in Pulaski, Co. Ky. in 1808. The last tax listing for a JOHN FELKINS in Pulaski Co. Ky. is 1816. As a matter of fact the only FELKINS continuing to pay taxes in Pulaski Co. was WILLIAM who is listed up until 1829.

Later in 1810 when JOHN is 51 (and his wife 48 close to according to Vet. Admin. Letter) their are 3 children less than 10 years of age living in the same household and 1 daughter between 16-26. Some of these may be the children of that daughter. Or they may not be related at all.

A JOHN FELKINS next shows up in the 1820 Census for both Cumberland and adjoining Adair Counties. However at this time neither JOHN JR. nor MARTIN had a daughter old enough to marry, yet in 1819 a LUCINDA FELKINS married ISAAC WELLS in Cumberland Co. Ky. This must have been one of the members of the household of JOHN Sr. in the Pulaski 1810 Census. No other FELKINS heads of households are shown in Cumberland Co. at that time.

JOHN FELKINS is listed next in 1818 in Overton Co. Tennessee at age 74 seeking his Revolutionary war pension and his birthplace is given as VA. This does place him as the same JOHN FELKINS of VA who fought in the Rev. War. But the 1818 date is a misinterpretation of printed info as mentioned below.
He is shown to have died in Overton Co. Tennessee in 1839. This would place his age at death at about 80 years old.

A portion of JOHN's property declaration to the Pension Board:

The following is the amount of property owned by me on the 18th of March 1818-- one mare worth about $30; on cow and calf, worth about $8; one two-year-old heifer worth about $3; about 7 or 8 head of hogs, worth about $12; one plough worth about $1.25; two small ? worth about $1.00; one three-quarter auger, worth about $ .50; one iron wedge worth about $ .75; one chopping axe worth about $1.50; one oven worth about $1.00; one kettle, worth about $2.00; one pot worth about $2.00; making in all $63.00. The cow and calf died. The hogs were made use of to support my family and the axe wore out. The full amount of the property is ? (probably $41.50)
Sworn to and declared on the 26th day of Oct. 1830 before the court of Overton County aforesaid when setting .....
Wm. Gore (Clerk of Overton Co.)

Note:      Some listings show JOHN FELKINS as already being in Overton Co. TN in 1818, this is a misinterpretation of JOHN's filing for Pension in Overton county Tn. in 1830 under the 1818 Revelutionary War Pension Act. It is more likely that he lived in Adair, or Cumberland Counties in Ky. until between 1820 and 1829 when he moved to Tennessee. In the 1820 Census JOHN FELKINS is listed in Adair Co. and JOHN & MARTIN FELKINS are listed in the adjoining Cumberland Co. Ky.
(The Revolutionary War fileing information above was obtained from Jean Sharp of Eastaboga, Al, who was kind enough to furnish me with a copy of information she obtained from the Veterans Adminestration.) JOHN's his wife's ages are also given in this correspondence as well as fileing dates and details on JOHN's property at the time.

JOHN FELKINS Sr. may have come to Ky. in a group with a brother WILLIAM. In 1810 a WILLIAM FELKINS is listed as a seperate household but is not mentioned again after 1813. He might possibly have died or moved. I have some information furnished by Jean Sharp of Eastaboga, Alablama that a WILLIAM FELKINS died in the War of 1812. The date of death was listed according to her information (Kentucky Soldiers of the War of 1812) as May 2, 1814.
